The inspiration for Motley Crue's song, Merry-Go-Round, was a bizarre incident Nikki Sixx witnessed in Seattle. He saw a person with a mental condition being taken away by authorities when he refused to get off a Merry-Go-Round

Ray Parker Jr had to get pretty creative with this, as writing a song with the word "Ghostbusters" in it is quite challenging. In an interview with George Cole, author of The Last Miles: The Music of Miles Davis, 1980-1991, Parker said: "It sounds easy now because you've heard the song. But if somebody told you to write a song with the word 'Ghostbusters' in it, it's pretty difficult. That was the hard part - getting the title in the song."

Parker added that he got his girlfriend and her friends to shout the title for the chorus, since he didn't want to sing it. Parker, who was a renowned session musician, played most of the instruments on the track.

The original title was "Vietnam." The director Paul Schrader sent Springsteen a script for a movie called Born In The U.S.A., about a rock band struggling with life and religion. This gave Bruce the idea for the new title. Unfortunately for Schrader, when he was finally ready to make the movie in 1985, the title "Born In The U.S.A." was too associated with the song. Springsteen helped him out however, providing the song "Light Of Day," which became the new title for Schrader's movie and the feature song in the film.

"I Remember You" is the obligatory slow power ballad that every metal band seemed to crank out in the late '80s and early '90s. Skid Row bass player Rachel Bolan and guitarist Dave Sabo share writing credits, as they do on many Skid Row songs. But really, what sells the song is Sebastian Bach's iron tonsils delivering a blistering vocal performance.

Guitarist of Queen, Brian May's guitar is called the Red Special, and was made with the help of his father, who was an engineer, while Brian was still in high school. The body was made from an old mantelpiece that a family friend had discarded while renovating his house and the whammy bar was made from parts of an old bicycle kick stand. It is the interesting mix of materials that make May's guitar tone impossible to duplicate and why he sounds so original. It has a unique tone, which has become his signature, and it allowed him to create various sound effects found on many of Queen's songs, such as "Get Down, Make Love."

Jim Steinman, who was Meat Loaf's songwriter, turned the saying " Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad," into a song about the elusive nature of love. The song begins with Meat Loaf getting kicked to the curb by his girl, presumably because he won't tell her he loves her. He makes the case that even though he will never love her, he's good enough, since after all he does want her and need her, and happy endings are only for fairy tales.

We then learn that his commitment issues stem from a previous relationship - one with the only woman he will ever love. She once left him with the same explanation: I want you, I need you, but I'll never love you.

With a distinctive guitar riff and an unforgettable opening line, "Your Love" by The Outfield, became one of the most memorable hits of the '80s. When lead singer Tony Lewis declares, "Josie's on a vacation far away, come around and talk it over," we know he's up to something. Our hero spends the rest of the song in seduction mode, trying to convince this girl (probably an ex-girlfriend) to have a one-night-stand. He pulls every trick from the player's handbook:

Nobody Will Ever Know ("Stay the night but keep it undercover")
I Really Need Comfort ("Another shoulder to cry upon")
I Don't Know Where Else To Turn ("I ain't got many friends left to talk to")
It Won't Mean Anything ("I just wanna use your love tonight")

Does he capture his prey? We never find out, but it's clear that Josie deserves better.

In a 1985 interview with Spin magazine, ZZ Top's bass player Dusty Hill explained: "T**h, where I grew up, had two meanings. It meant what it means in New York. T**h is also like plush, very lavish, very luxurious. So it depended on how you used it. If somebody said, "That's a t**h car,' you knew they weren't talking about the rear end of the car. That's like saying, 'That's a cherry short.' But t**h as in 'That's a nice t**h on that girl,' that's definitely the same as the Yiddish word. I don't know how we got it in Dallas. All it could have took was one guy moving down from New York."

John Lennon wrote "I Am the Walrus. As stated in the DVD Composing the Beatles Songbook, John was throwing together nonsense lyrics to mess with the heads of scholars trying to dissect The Beatles songs. They also mention that it's John's answer to Bob Dylan's "getting away with murder" style of songwriting. Lennon told Pl***oy years later that "I can write that crap too," which is rarely mentioned in relation to this song.

Collins wrote "In The Air Tonight," about the anger he felt after divorcing his first wife Andrea in 1979. He was so devastated that he left Genesis for a short time. All the original songs on the Face Value album, including the followup hit "I Missed Again," were at one time intended to be "messages" to his first wife in an attempt to lure her back to him.

Bobby "Boris" Pickett was a nightclub entertainer who performed with a group called The Cordials. He wrote "Monster Mash" with his friend Lenny Capizzi. They were both big horror movie fans, and Pickett would do an impression of actor Boris Karloff (known for playing the monster in many Frankenstein movies) during the speaking part of "Little Darlin'" that went over well in his act. As Capizzi played the piano, he and Pickett put together this song with his Karloff impression in mind. They came up with the plot about Frankenstein's monster starting a dance craze.

"Hotel California" was written by Don Felder, Glenn Frey and Don Henley, this song is about materialism and excess. California is used as the setting, but it could relate to anywhere in America. Don Henley in the London Daily Mail November 9, 2007 said: "Some of the wilder interpretations of that song have been amazing. It was really about the excesses of American culture and certain girls we knew. But it was also about the uneasy balance between art and commerce."

Shortly after the Band On The Run album was released, McCartney told Melody Maker: "The basic idea about the band on the run is a kind of prison escape. At the beginning of the album the guy is stuck inside four walls, and eventually breaks out. There is a thread, but it's not a concept album."
Asked if this was a reference to Wings escaping from The Beatles, he replied: "Sort of – yeah. I think most bands on tour are on the run."

Zac Brown co-wrote "Toes" with bassist John Driskell Hopkins, Wyatt Durette and Shawn Mullins. He recalled to Billboard magazine: "(Durette) called me about six in the morning on my home phone, which either meant that something was wrong or that somebody was up late partying. He said, 'I got my toes in the water, ass in the sand and we gotta write a song about it.' That's kind of how that one started."
