Last minute pre- Christmas job!

New black heads ordered for all VIVA Carnival Clubs nesting surdos. We were pleased that our friends at JP Percussion stock these nice Izzo ones. The coloured VIVA kit has been looking rather torn and raggedy, so we’re really pleased with how the replacement heads on this set look and sound.

We will be looking for a working party of volunteers to fit the rest of them in the new year ( so avoid eye contact if you don’t want to get roped in!!)

What a great day 'at the office' for us! Drumming & movement at the Christmas fayre, we met Santa and look at the cute ponies who also came to the party! Followed by a Raw Samba gig at Sandown's family fun day in the sunshine ☀️🥁🎄🎅

We are running our Christmas Bump to Baby Tasters this week and next.
Please share with any pregnant or young families who might like to come. ITS FREE TO ATTEND!!!!

These taster sessions are now going to be Christmas party specials… do share with any pregnant or new families please.

It’s free to attend and we are running 5 week music courses in the new year.

These courses are aimed at supporting young perinatal families- from pregnancy to 2 years old, to enjoy baby-appropriate music in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Our drumming, rhythm and movement sessions will have an emphasis on gentle sounds, with child appropriate instruments.

Our baby-oriented sessions are a lot of fun with plenty of opportunity to meet other people in the same stage of life, and make friends . They’re all being held in Family Hubs IW Family Information Hub across he Island, so you'll be able to combine a music session with other useful pregnancy/ baby services.

There's no need to book, just turn up!

Please share with anyone pregnant or with a young baby as well as their partners and families.

We were introduced to Mariana of Sustenta Carnaval whilst in Rio. They are doing incredible work, recycling and reusing literally tons and tons of discarded carnival costumes. We went to meet Jean and have a look….Wait till you see this… Emma’s going to take you on a quick tour…. (In the comments)

Wow what a day! We had the privilege of learning original Condomblé rhythms, dancing and singing from the amazing Donfono de Omolu & his team.

Wonderful & joyful experience! Also it was Emma's turn to receive the Estandarte (flag) for this Escola de bateria! (& now has the job to not forget it for class tomorrow).

We are looking for more samba fun tomorrow 🪘🇧🇷🪘

Today’s workshop was at the legendary samba school batería GRES Estácio de Sá with Mestre Chuvisco and his director team.
We had a great opportunity to play all the instruments in the batería, learning each sections’ groove pattern before putting it all together.

We’ve been made to feel so welcome, we’re so grateful to meet all these amazing people

We absolutely love our display that’s going up in Ryde, ready for The New Carnival Company ‘s Merry and Bright event, this weekend.

We’ve been working hard with students from St George's School - IOW to upcycle plastic beer barrels, kindly supplied by Goddards Brewery

On the theme of the 12 Days of Christmas, we’ve (of course) made 12 drums, for the 12 Drumners Drumming.

Check them out in Shademakers UK ‘s window at the top of Union Street. They will be all lit up with coloured lights soon.

We visited Ivsom drum factory where all the drums are made by hand, to supply all the samba schools.
We treated ourselves to chocalhos, which they made then and there for us.

We are so lucky…. We have had our trip timed to perfection!! (Thanks JP Percussion)!!

This weekend, to celebrate the national day of samba, Rio Carnaval are putting on three nights of samba school parades at the Cidade do Samba (samba city)

All the ‘grupo especial’ samba schools (it’s a bit like the football leagues, where you compete with each other to win- these schools are the the top league) will be parading in the same order as they will during the actual carnival. It’s going to be an amazing experience and we are so looking forward to it.

This spectacle is run as community support, so entry is free if you donate 1kg of non perishable food. ( we’ve been sent a lot of appropriate items)

This course is crazily brilliant.
A 4 hour workshop with Vitor Villadao, playing instruments new to us. We are being really stretched, learning better techniques and being fully immersed in the Brazilian samba culture.
So great to see our friend Gabriel Lopes here in Rio
