Significance of coconut In Indian weddings

In Indian weddings, coconut is used as an offering. It is a sacred fruit that symbolizes selflessness. When bride and groom tie the knots of marriage, a coconut represents giving each other selflessly in the relationship, keeping the egos aside. Coconut is also offered by the in laws to the bride as a symbol of fertility. The bride is the one who will bring an heir to the family, with that in mind, the coconut is placed in the brides lap while she sits during prayers.
For any auspicious occasion, coconut is broken. During weddings, a coconut is placed as an offering to the God and later broken and distributed among st guest as prasad (blessed fruit). The three marks on coconut represents the three eye God Lord Shiva and symbolizes a wish fulfillment fruit.
