Dark Dining Room Northampton, Massachusetts based traveling house concert series organized by Matthew Larsen featuring national/touring acts in intimate, low-lit settings.

Why “Dark Dining Room”? Matthew Larsen is a singer/songwriter who started doing these types of shows after going through cancer treatment at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in 2005. Recovery was slow and isolating, so he started inviting musicians over to play their songs in his mostly empty unlit dining room. There was something special about being in a cozy room with a group of other people listeni

ng to live music in the dark. It made everyone focus on the performance and enjoy a shared experience. Since then, Dark Dining Room shows have been held in various houses, lofts, and apartments throughout Western Massachusetts. Past performers include The Low Anthem, Winterpills, Heather Maloney, Rosary Beard, Mark Schwaber, Colorway, David Berkeley, Luray, Kaiser Cartel, Amber Rubarth, Native Run, Will Stratton, Matthew Carefully, Haunt, Andrew Vladeck, Dennis Crommett, Henning Ohlenbusch, and Matthew Larsen and The Documents. As a nod to Matthew’s cancer history, certain shows have been held to raise money for charitable organizations that make a difference in the cancer community. Dark Dining Room has raised money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, American Cancer Society, The SAMFund, and Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Typically, organizations such as these are highlighted in some way at each show. Matthew Larsen and Greg Saulmon coordinate the Dark Dining Room series as well as perform in Matthew Larsen and The Documents.

UNKIND is out now.

It took about three years to finish writing this song. It kind of had to, considering its nature. Once it all took shape, I sent a demo to my friend Michael Lockwood, who took on the unusual job of remotely producing a track featuring six musicians in six different locations. It would be my first pandemic baby.

Michael called in a bunch of trusted contributors from his days in the Aimee Mann band. First, John Sands added drums, and it was good. Then the fantastic Patrick Warren laid in his plaintive piano and those lovely strings, and it was great. Somewhere in here, Michael recorded some electric guitars and I recut the lead vocal in my bedroom closet. Backing vocals came from Buddy Judge, whom I have been a fan of since The Grays (if you don’t know their album Ro Sham Bo, you should). Finally, Aimee herself added a terrific bassline that glued the whole piece together. Mixing was done by the one and only Michael Brauer. I couldn’t be happier with the results.

Special thanks to David Doobinin, who shot the cover photo (and the one below as well); Joanna Choy, who created the artwork; and to Sparkle Plenty Records, Deko Entertainment, and Jeff Keller Management for getting this track to your ears.

Most importantly, THANK YOU for all your love and support. There is so much more to come. ✌️
