For my “Flower Forward” presentation at last week, I chose to focus on four undervalued flowers. Seen here, ideas aimed at celebrating solidago. A ubiquitous filler that no one seems to care much about. rocked the crescent headpiece and disc bouquet/object that team members and made, and the caftan that I designed with the help of and . ( A photograph of solidago was taken, repeated and mirrored, crepe de chine fabric created, and caftan constructed!! ) Besides solidago, we used the lowest laterals that always want to jump off of gloriosa lily stems. Fun ideas for further exploration. 💛💛

This look illustrates the intent behind my presentation at last week. My program was called “Flower Forward,” and the aim was to share thoughts and techniques on doing more with less, staying inspired, and contributing positively to our field. As a lover of floristry, I aim to offer ideas that draw the public in; to make them curious about what we do. I want the public to be surprised!! To see us as artists, each with a unique vision. Increased public interest means more opportunity for all. As a teacher, I want to offer ideas that support growth, promote curiosity, solve problems, demystify processes, and encourage florists to explore their creativity. In general, I’m here to participate in elevating floristry! With each idea I share, I aim to contribute to that goal. Seen here, a few bunches of agapanthus and delphinium transformed into an over the top headpiece that doubles as a cascade bouquet, and a shoulder piece that is also designed to be worn as a headpiece. Two designs, four options. Carry the bouquet down the aisle, then wear on the head to the reception! Wear the shoulder piece to the show, plop on your head for the after party! Playful ideas to inspire designer and public alike. Swipe to the very last pic to see 💙
Thank you to , , & for having faith in me! Thank you to for your support and gorgeous flowers. What an honor this has been.

What prompts me to make this corny proclamation??
Nearly 20 years ago, I stumbled into floristry when a friend asked me to arrange her wedding flowers. I have always been curious and what I call a “vaguely creative” person... interested in many artful things, but not enthusiastic or focused enough on a single one long enough to explore it deeply. When I found this work, I instantly connected with the medium and became obsessed.
I recognized that the practice of floristry allowed me to weave together many of my lifelong interests: my reverence for nature, my love of fashion and accessory design, my love of entertaining, and my love of the visual arts. But I think what made me fall in love with floristry so deeply is that I instantly sensed that I’d found my calling. After flitting around for years, I recognized that the deep curiosity and enthusiasm I felt for this work deserved my immediate and full attention. I’d finally found a focus, and this filled me with a deep sense of relief and sense of purpose. Also, and I couldn't articulate this at the time, I recognized that this is a unique, emotive artform with a deep well of rich art principles to explore. I could see that this interest would be with me for my lifetime.
Much more soon…

CELEBRATION!!!!
The manuscript and photos for my new book, “Flowers for All” have been turnt in!! This new book baby will arrive Spring, 2023.
As with my first book, the resources section was my favorite to put together. The book is meaningful to me because 99% of all the materials I used to create came from local and US farms. A little excerpt about this: “Nearly all of the materials I’ve used in this book are seasonal and locally-sourced. I wanted to create with materials that were available to me at any given time instead of exotics available only to those of us with access to professional floral wholesalers or specialty sources. As a result, I hope that the projects within feel accessible to as many people as possible. I gathered the bulk of my materials from my ( very ) humble garden and yard, my neighborhood ( with permission ), my local farmer’s market, local grocers, local greenhouses, and local and US flower farms. The deliberate practice of placing value on what is available locally cultures a pride of place that not only benefits us personally, it enriches the local economy, supports local growers, and reduces environmental harm. Locally sourced materials also convey a sense of season, making them that much richer, evocative and meaningful. Over the years, this deliberate practice has strengthened my appreciation for the place in the world and time I inhabit.”

I’ve really enjoyed arranging and rearranging this tangle of dried smilax vine that I saved from an August wedding that I worked on. The vine makes the most incredible armature because it has oodles of grabby little laterals that just hang on to anything introduced to them. Honesty, this should be sold as a chicken wire alternative!! Swipe through to see the stages of this wall piece. The dried hydrangea, tallow, and birch branches were tucked into the piece with ease…right where I wanted them. Now this big guy is on the floor in my studio waiting for it’s next iteration.

Dried up old smilax armature decorated with tallow berries, naturally dried hydrangea, and birch branches. moon vase hangs out to keep the cloud company.
By the way, I dropped (!!!) this vase today and it was not damaged in the slightest!! Beautiful craftsmanship indeed. Cannot wait for the pro pics by ✨✨

Floral bib necklace from a few years back. Most of my favorite materials are woven into this baby: hyacinth, lilac, lisianthus, astrantia, allium siculum, nigella, scabiosa, blueberries, and amaranthus. Sometimes an idea for a design and the materials needed to execute it meet and merge perfectly…and it feels so good and so easy. Other times, the process of bringing the two together feels near impossible. I have felt the disappointment of this many times! You have a wonderful idea, run around all over town gathering the perfect ingredients, add them one by one to your “stew,” tend them lovingly, and then finally taste- and the stew is sour!! As I work on completing my second book ( out spring 2023 ) I am learning to expect that sometimes executing one little good thing at a time is enough. It keeps us humble and it makes us grateful for the moments when the chemistry is right.

Powerful photo from a little collaborative session with the incredible bre'ann white] this summer. Flowers and plants are so communicative, especially when worn. I see strength, vulnerability, greatness, softness, impermanence and connectedness to the earth in this photo!! What do you see?
The best part of this for me is that this luffa gourd necklace was bre'ann white]’s idea. and helped me whip this up in minutes. Model and filmmaker elevated each piece he wore and made them into art. It was so refreshing to respond to what the team wanted to see- something uncontrived and organic. I recommend hanging out with other artists ( and young people in general ) from time to time to gain fresh perspective on your work.
I’m so grateful that I get to share thoughts with others about how to use this medium to communicate.

Looking forward to opening enrollment tomorrow to my Floral Mentor course. This is the most juicy, collaborative, and meaningful course I’ve ever put together. I share my point of view on all things floral, culturing a creative mindset, and harnessing the wonder of the golden ratio. But the most beautiful part of the course is that there are also contributions from six of my own personal mentors. People that have changed the way I navigate my life! I’m so proud of this course!! All the details tomorrow. ✨

Glassy peach seed pods fill these branches of unknown variety. This is a new neighborhood find, snd I’m in love with it. The delicate, lightweight branches can be bent and manipulated easily. There’s a chandelier in their future. Yes, I had permission to pick, and I’m currently researching to see what this guy is! I’m hoping he’s not a bad actor. If anyone out there knows, I’d appreciate it! ✨

Headed to Virginia tomorrow to prepare for my presentation at the on Friday! This talk was postponed a year…and was *supposed* to happen during my book launch year. I’m excited it’s happening now. In putting together my slides, I revisited the many many projects that make up The Art of Wearable Flowers. What a labor of love the book was. This is a favorite moment- a “corsage” of incredible double clematis from , star of bethlehem, allium, gomphrena, pieris japonica, artemisia, sweet pea foliage, zinnia, scabiosa, love-in-a-puff, and amaranthus. Swipe to see it worn as a crown.
Thank you always to photographer and lead model .

Removed the seeds and cut the bract structure off the face of a large dried sunflower, and cured it in the sun. It became a leathery, flexible material that I think vibes well with my vase. I curled one piece and tucked it in to provide support for the stem of nearly dead ammi, and the other piece rests atop like a little hat. Thinking this could also be fed onto a metal headband and used as a fascinator base…we shall see. Hope you like this tiny idea ✨

I had to share this dance-around -the-house delicious mocktail with you all. It’s fiery, invigorating, belly warming, and just crazy good.
Per serving:
•2 oz FRESH ginger juice
•Juice of one lemon
•Juice of one lime
•2-3 oz grapefruit juice
•Habanero hot sauce to taste ( I love )
•REAL maple syrup to taste
•Ice cubes
• Classico seasoning for the rim

Wet the rim of a coupe glass with a lime wedge, and dip into a dish of tajin to coat.
In a large cocktail shaker, combine everything except the tajin. Shake vigorously for about 30 seconds. Strain into your glass and garnish with a luffa gourd bloom!! Yes, you can add tequila..but try it without first!! Truly a firecracker of a drink that won’t leave you pickled.

Finalizing my plans for my upcoming presentation today! This presentation was supposed to be part of last year’s celebratory book tour; and now it is finally happening! Excited to see this exquisite museum, and excited to be part of an incredible line-up of floral presenters. I’ll be spreading my love for wearable flowers, and also sharing approachable ideas anyone can use to design more artfully. There will be a book signing as well! Who will I see there??

I’ve been buying sunflower heads for years…always so amazed by their beauty, but usually doing nothing with them besides feeding them to the squirrels. These huge heads are being prepped for a special installation. Few things are as strangely beautiful!! Watch to the end for a very very satisfying moment. The grower, Carol, is an elder at our local farmers market. She was so delighted and surprised that I love these as much as she does. It touched me how happy this made her. I received many hugs!! I’m the grateful one though, because interesting materials like this bring me an immense amount of joy!! To be able to create with materials that are already perfect works of art- that’s fortune. ✨

Brought to you by Fiskars Americas]! A beautiful rope found years ago in NYC finally finds a purpose- as an armature for this incredible vessel by . A thick “rope” of porcelain vine is secured using u-shaped pins of straight florists wire made with the help of the Fiskars Americas] “precision” wire cutters and needle-nose pliers. I hope this little idea sparks something in you and inspires you to find the beauty that is always hiding in everyday objects.
