The Garfield Sobers Gymnasium was the place to be last Sunday to relive fond memories of love, and sad ones of longing and yearning through the music of hit making duo Air Supply.
For over an hour hundreds of fans rocked and swayed and sang along to hits like Power of Love, Just As I am, Every Woman, and Lost in Love.
From the opening bars of the first song Even the Nights until the last note of biggest hit All Out of Love, Air Supply and its fantastic four member band gave the audience its money's worth in performance. In a set laced with lead singer Russell Hitchcock and songwriter/guitarist/singer Graham Russell's characteristic wit, the largely Barbadian audience thoroughly enjoyed the music that sounded as fresh and lovely today as it did over 30 years ago when it became chart topppers.
Some members of the audience on the ground floor were so moved by the music that they leapt out of their seats and danced. Some others were only too overjoyed when Graham and Hitchock called them to the front of the stage for a more up-close and personal interaction.

One of the things that makes Air Supply's concerts so enjoyable is the duo's practice of walking amongst the audience while singing. This time was no different and scores of fans took the opportunity to get photos and hug the darling singers whose music was and remains the language of people in love.

The local acts definitely proved themselves a match for the awarding winning Air Supply. The youthful Nexcyx got the evening off to a wonderful start with their eclectic set which included a few 'old school' classics. They infused their originals with other hits from Michael Jackson and Prince, and surely won themselves an older demographic of fans....anybody would love a band who gives a fabulous live performance of 'Rock With You', 'Human Nature' and 'Purple Rain'! Also giving a dynamic performance was Miss Diva herself, Marissa Lindsey, who may have surprised many by telling them she has two albums and is working on a third. One of Barbados' best kept secrets is also the vocal coach of a set of young artistes like Livvi Franc and Vita Chambers, who are making waves in their own right. Exceptional vocalist Tamara Marshall also shared the stage and introduced some originals as well as giving another outstanding performance of one of her favourite songs, 'Imagine'.

Two questions on the minds of many leaving the venue that night was: who will Universal Entertainment feature next, and when?

Air Supply is a soft rock duo with a succession of hits worldwide from the late 1970s.
They comprise British guitarist and vocalist Graham Russell and Australian lead vocalist Russell Hitchcock accompanied by musicians and other singers.

Air Supply’s lists of popular songs include "All Out of Love”, “Lost in Love”. "The One That You Love", Here I Am", "Even the Nights Are Better", “Dance With Me”, “Can’t Stop the Rain”, "Sweet Dreams", "Making Love Out Of Nothing at All", and “Every Woman in the World”, “The Power of Love”, “Two Less Lonely People in the World” and “Without You”.

They scored eight Top Ten hits in the United States in the early 1980s. "All Out of Love,” released in 1980 reached No. 2. "The One That You Love" reached No. 1 and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1981. "Here I Am" peaked at No. 5 on the same chart in November that year and remained in the Top 40 for 15 weeks. The song also spent three weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart.

"Even the Nights Are Better" was released in mid-1982 and first charted in the United States on the Billboard adult contemporary chart, where it spent four weeks at No. 1 and was Air Supply's third song to reach the summit on that chart. The song also reached the peak position on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the group's seventh consecutive Top 5 hit on the U.S. pop chart.

As recently as May 2010, Air Supply released their latest album "Mumbo Jumbo" featuring the single "Dance with Me" which reached number 28 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart.

Russell Hitchcock

As I'm sit here writing this thinking that I can't believe that Graham and I are on the eve of releasing our 25th CD, "Mumbo Jumbo"! It's been a long road getting here certainly, and I never could have imagined the career that we have been allowed to enjoy for such a long time.

I was born in Melbourne in Victoria, Australia on June the 15th 1949 to my parents Mal and Bette having my sister Gail preceded me by four years. We lived in the suburb of Brunswick close to an iron foundry and a brick works and although we were not wealthy, we were provided for to the best of my parent's abilities.

My childhood was a happy one and there was always music in the house, my Dad was a singer in his younger years and my sister had a great voice too! My early school years were uneventful save for being struck by a truck when I was seven years old and on my way to school. My mother said I was never the same after that (joke!).

I really became interested in music when my sister bought a record player and I got to listen to her 12 inch long play records. Frank Sinatra,
Tony Bennett and Tony Bennett were among the great voices that I
was exposed to. It wasn't until I was in High School that music really
became important to me when one of my good friends handed me
a single recording. He said, "You have to listen to this, it's a new
band called The Beatles." I was amazed at the raw, exciting
sound, the vocals, everything. I was hooked!

In 1964, my cousin presented me with tickets for us to go and
see The Beatles perform in Melbourne. They played six songs I
think, and of course I could barely hear them above the
screaming thousands that attended the concert. From that
moment forward, I lived and breathed The Beatles, and to this day
I believe that they are the greatest band that has ever existed.

I dropped out of high school when I was sixteen and worked in retail for
some years and of course earning an income, as meager as it was,
allowed me to purchase my own records which were basically everything
The Beatles released and anything else that caught my ear, The Bee Gees
were the most recognizable and local bands including The Twilights,
The Purple Hearts and my favorite voice, John Farnham were
all in my collection.

"I am a child of inner-city Melbourne who grew up very poor and who, fortunately, now gets to sing some of the greatest songs ever written." — Russell Hitchcock

Air Supply: BIOGRAPHY

Graham Russell & Russell Hitchcock met on May 12, 1975, the first day of rehearsals for "Jesus Christ Superstar" in Sydney, Australia; they became instant friends with their common love for The Beatles and, of course, singing.

After the shows' performances at 10:30, they would play pizza parlors, coffee bars and night clubs with just one guitar and two voices. They quickly gained a reputation for great harmonies and for original songs that Graham was constantly writing. They made a demo on a cassette of two songs, "Love and Other Bruises" and "If You Knew Me" and took it to every record company in Sydney. Everyone turned it down but one — CBS Records — who admired their unique style.

They made a single in one afternoon and it shot to number one on the national charts. Air Supply was born! That same year, they opened for Rod Stewart across Australia and then throughout the U.S. and Canada playing all of the famous huge venues before Rod would take the stage. They found new fans, but did not break the U.S. market.

Back in Australia they had to start again and made a record called Life Support. On this record were some treasures of songs, including "Lost in Love" which went Top 10 in Australia and somehow found its way to music industry executive Clive Davis in New York.

Clive immediately signed Air Supply to Arista Records and in 1980, "Lost in Love" became the fastest selling single in the world, leaping to the top of all of the charts. Now Air Supply was on their way. The second single was "All Out of Love," and that went up the charts even quicker.

Seven top-five singles later, Air Supply at that time had equaled The Beatles' run of consecutive top five singles. The albums Lost in Love, The One That You Love, Now & Forever, and The Greatest Hits sold in excess of 20 million copies. "Lost in Love" was named Song of the Year in 1980, and, with the other singles, sold more than 10 million copies.

The trademark sound of Russell Hitchcock's soaring tenor voice and Graham Russell's simple yet majestic songs created a unique sound that would forever be known as Air Supply.

However, it is the live shows that always hold audiences captive around the world. They were the first Western group to tour China, Taiwan, and countless other countries that before would not allow pop music across their borders. In 1983 they recorded "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" by Jim Steinman which solidified the group as a permanent force in modern music. This song was released on The Greatest Hits album which soared past 7 million copies.

"Lost in Love", "All Out of Love", "The One That You Love", "Sweet Dreams", and "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" have each achieved multi-million plays on the radio.

In 1986 the group's music was still playing endlessly on radio. That same year, Graham was married to actress Jodi Varble from Rochelle, Illinois, who also was his leading lady in the video for "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All."

Air Supply began to tour with lavish productions in places that no one had been before. In South America and Asia they became a part of everyone's life. In 1988, Air Supply was asked to participate in Australia's bicentennial celebration and to play for HRH Prince Charles and HRH Princess Diana, where they learned both were already ardent fans. This engagement would be one of their most treasured moments in their career.

In 1989, they recorded "The Earth Is" album selling over a million copies outside of the U.S. This album was followed by "The Vanishing Race" CD and, with the singles "Goodbye" and "It's Never Too Late", again saw multi-platinum success. The following albums, "News from Nowhere", "Yours Truly", and "Across the Concrete Sky" all gave their second greatest hits album multi-platinum status as they traveled the world each and every year.

In 2000, a new production company was founded to be devoted to Air Supply's entire future product, called A Nice Pear, which gave them complete creative control.

In July 2005, their live DVD, "It Was 30 Years Ago Today" celebrated 30 years of success around the world and in that same month, Air Supply smashed attendance records when, in Cuba, at one show they played to 175,000 people. Also 2005 saw the release of "The Singer and the Song", an acoustic album of many of their big hits which received critical acclaim.

In May 2010, the long-awaited album, "Mumbo Jumbo" –also the duo's first studio recording in eight years- was released. Recorded at Graham Russell's home studio near Park City, Utah and at Odds On's state of the art facilities in Las Vegas with top session musicians and an orchestra, "Mumbo Jumbo" was produced by Russell and engineered by Odds On's Sean O'Dwyer, whose credits include Pink Floyd, Randy Newman and Blink-182. Among the 14-tracks, released by Odds On's label, was the first single "Dance With Me," which earned Air Supply a prominent feature article in Billboard Magazine titled "Still Supplying The Hits After 35 Years."

Just weeks after composer and vocalist Graham Russell was honored with a BMI Million-Air

Certificate recognizing 3 million performances of the duo's hit "All Out Of Love," Air Supply's new song was the #1 most added track on the FMQB AC40 Chart, and also one of the most added on the R&R (Radio and Records) AC Chart and the Mediabase AC chart.

In 2011, the duo continues to play more than 150 shows a year worldwide, including stops in England, Ireland, Israel, Philippines, Korea, Japan, Canada, the U.S. and beyond.

Currently, we just finished filming our live Jerusalem, Israel show for a new DVD that will be out later this year. The DVD will feature two new songs, "Sanctuary" and "Everywhere." "Sanctuary" will be released as a single on iTunes by October, 2011.
