If you're in NYC next weekend, and want a show to go to, I have one to recommend. I wish I could be out there for it!

Years ago, living in NYC, great photo opps often appeared right next to you.

I most always had 35mm point/shoot camera in a belt holster, to quick draw for just these kind of moments. (It was pre-camera-phone era)

That's how I met the very talented .... sitting next to me .... each of us on our way to our wherevers - one of those organic moments of tableau vivant that seem to just happen in high-population crossroads like NYC.

On Kaori's later visits to NYC, we got together to snap a few shots here and there.

Since then, she has had a very fine career, based in France, as dancer, choreographer, owner of her own dance studio, and most recently as the director of .

She recently told me she'll be back in NYC this next week, to perform the traditional Japanese story, "The Silk Drum", at The on Oct. 24 and Oct. 25.

So, a good excuse for me to dust off some of these shots from the archives (circa 2001), and share 'em with ya.

Let me know if you make it to the show!

Here’s an event I was at a year ago - the 2024 Plumas Longboard Races - a period piece downhill ski race like they did during the 1860s gold rush days in Northern California, out at Plumas Ski Club

You can read more about it in the latest issue of Moonshine Ink in an article by Tim Hauserman , and see more pictures there (there’s also a digital version of the magazine at the www.MoonshineInk.com)

Here are a few videos of the competition, including:
* the women’s championship won by Gina Luciano (who also once beat Jon Moseley in this event)
* the men’s championship won by cover model Adam “The Interloper” Henriques,
* the awards ceremony,
* and an interview with Gina about the event.

A New Years Eve Miracle.
Fun story down below.
(true story. I was there).

[First ... apologies for just these screen shots of dusty scans of 35mm photo prints. Too lazy and in disarray to properly prep ... maybe some day I’ll scan negs and pretty ‘em up :) ]

Circa 2001 - Nep Foo visit to NYC.

We skated around a lot, covered a lot of ground, did and saw a lot of things. I probably have some videotape footage somewhere too??

We hit Times Square on New Years Eve, after midnight, to enjoy the afterglow/aftermath.

We sought thick piles of confetti. Took a bucket to a tall roof to toss confetti down.

Kid went to a pile in the street, stood in it, stretched his arms out wide, and slowly started rotating in a circle.

The confetti began to rise around him in a vortex/funnel shape.

Bystanders, cops and I froze and watched in amazement - looking over at each other to nod in acknowledgement that we were in fact actually seeing what we thought we were seeing.

Downright surreal.

Luckily, in this era before everyone had cameras in pocket on their phones, I had my point/shoot 35mm on my hip, grabbed it and snagged these few shots.

I’m sure the random other witnesses probably talk about that moment in the years since :)

Additional photos of other special moments included here for fun.

Happy New Year everyone. I hope 2025 is your best year yet!
