What is known today as the grassroots organization SLC 2030, was started right after the ten-year anniversary celebration of the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Games. At the Salt Lake 2002 ten year anniversary, Governor Gary Herbert expressed interest in Salt Lake and Utah bidding for a future Winter Games. After two Olympic Exploratory Committees, and with the support of business, community, and Olympic leaders, it is clear Utah is “ready, willing, and able” to host a future Winter Games.
As Salt Lake’s bid for a future Winter Games has evolved, so has this grassroots organization. SLC 2030 was originally known as SLC 2022 supporting Salt Lake’s potential bid for the 2022 Winter Games. The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) decided not to bid for the 2022 Winter Games, which prompted Salt Lake to focus on 2026. SLC 2026 was changed to SLC 2030 once the USOC made it clear they would not bid for the 2026 Winter Games. Today SLC 2030 fully supports Salt Lake’s bid for the 2030 Winter Games, and can’t wait for the Olympics to return to Utah.
