dear New Orleans, thank you for hugging me close when i need it most. tomorrow will be the first LIVE poetry reading in over a year and id be lyin if i said i wasn’t emotional about it. im mad emotional about it. some special guests and elders i admire greatly will be with me. thank you & for the southern hospitality. shout out to the student artists who made the artwork for this flyer. giving thanks to the ancestors and spirits who guide my steps each day. The real me in my real environment bring my real self. I swear I barely leave home and I barely hate it. Re-centering, focusing on myself, my kids and what I want in life right now has truly helped me realize how good life can be. Removing a ton of baggage/friends/people etc from my space felt so unbelievably painful and different. It’s the people that are still around, still loving, still supporting that belong around me. There are people who can love and support you but not in ways you need them too. I hope you are finding who truly matters in your life and isn’t just around for a specific purpose or need. Forming friendships on seemingly irreplaceable bonds rather than what you can get or give to one another makes a big difference.

Not everyone is a friend or a long term chapter, some people really are just little blips.

Fell in love with the same person twice
fell apart, fell together
Lost everything
Gained way more in return.

This last year was intense for me personally. I removed a lot from my life willingly and unwillingly because it was God and the Universe leading me down an entirely new path. I’ve seen what happens around me when you speak up, speak out - the good and the bad. I’ve seen my hard work and ideas used, undervalued and stolen while simultaneously getting so much recognition. This was a year of polarization. Seeing the best and worst life can get all at once.

I’m thankful, so very thankful, humbled and appreciative of my life more than ever. I’m blessed to be able to do what I love and to have earned it & started from the cornfield abyss of Dunlap, myself. Life truly is amazing, trying and very hard. I’m thankful for the ability to stay true to myself even when I could no longer recognize who I was at times. I am blessed and full of life - literally, physically and spiritually. 👦🏻👦🏼👶🏼

🌽🧀 Today is my best friends birthday - my creator, my mother my rock. I really don’t like posting super corny ish but I have to express how happy I am to be able to have this woman in my life. This week we found out she was diagnosed with kidney cancer adding to her never ending fight with breast cancer that spread to her bones. This woman has fought for 12 years and never once asked for help or pity. I wish I could be more like her, she truly is God’s gift to anyone who has the pleasure of knowing her.

I’m sorry to put your fight on blast mom but I really want people to know how damn strong you are and how, against all odds, you persevere, you stay positive and you still see the beauty that life has to offer. To many more birthdays, to many more laughs and hugs and tears. I love you so much.
