Frederic Chopin Society An international classical piano recital series based in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul

The Frederic Chopin Society holds a unique place in the musical life of the Twin Cities as its only international classical piano recital series, presenting pianists in the early stages of their careers to prominent names in the music world. The acoustics and feel of a smaller hall allow artists to reveal their individual gifts most fully and enhance the concert experience for performer and audience.

From Rob Hubbard at the Strib:
Jonathan Biss
Local classical music lovers have had the pleasure of experiencing this insightful pianist’s artistry in collaboration with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra as he premiered five new piano concertos inspired by the five written by Beethoven. Now he’s turned his focus to Beethoven’s Viennese neighbor, Franz Schubert, asking composers Timo Andres, Caroline Shaw and Tyson Gholston Davis to write new solo piano works inspired by Schubert’s. He’ll open the Frederic Chopin Society’s season by performing the Davis piece between Schubert Impromptus and a Sonata. (3 p.m. Sun., Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center, 130 S. Macalester St., St. Paul, $20-$40, 612-822-0123 or chopinsocietymn.org)

In today’s Pioneer Press fall arts guide:
The Frederic Chopin Society: Jonathan Biss
You may recall Jonathan Biss from the Beethoven/5 commissioning project, where the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra commissioned five contemporary composers to write new Beethoven-inspired concertos that Biss performed. Biss’ new project, “Echoes of Schubert,” invites composers to create new music paired with Franz Schubert’s solo piano works. From this project, Biss will perform Tyson Gholston Davis’ “Expansions of Light” as part of his recital hosted by the Chopin Society, along with several works by Schubert himself. 3 p.m. Oct. 6, Macalester College’s Mairs Concert Hall, $40, 612-822-0123 or chopinsocietymn.org.

For the love of piano

The Frederic Chopin Society is an international piano recital series serving the greater metropolitan area of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Established in 1984, it holds a unique place in the region’s rich musical life as its only classical piano series. Artists presented include those in the early stages of their careers as well as prominent names in the music world. Although programs often include works by Chopin, the Society enjoys a wide range of keyboard music from over three centuries. Concerts are held in beautiful and intimate Mairs Concert Hall at Macalester College in St. Paul. The acoustics and feel of a smaller hall allow artists to reveal their individual gifts most fully and enhance the concert experience for all.
