Repost from Toyin Femi Akinlade..
I remember a few years ago maybe like 5 or 6 years when one of my brothers who had been searching for a job after NYSC; must have been like a year post-NYSC.He came home one day and said to me that he had heard of an opening with Etisalat but that it was a contract job. I asked how much they will be paying and he said N55,000.
I was livid. I was surprised that he was even thinking of taking up the job if offered. I'm like do you realise you are a Computer Science graduate from a prestigious private university with a 2:1 for that matter? Story for the gods.
I ran this by a big sister of mine who calmly agreed with me but then said something that blew my socks off.
''Toyin I quite agree that N55k is too small considering his course and class of degree but can you assure me that you can be giving him this same N55k every month without fail and without any delay?''
At that point I screamed,
''Aunty a whole N55k ke? If I deduct that from my salary what will I have left?''
She said,
''So you see that N55k is not small after all. It's just a question of perspective''.
This may just be for someone out there thinking one job or business maybe beneath them considering their social status but like Motunrayo Famoroti taught at the last Banters at Breakfast organised by Smart Stewards, everyone should have what she called 'shame money'.
For you that executive banker, your 'shame money' could be selling smoothies either to your colleagues or off working hours. For someone else, your 'shame money' could be registering that sleek ride on the Uber platform and rather than have it parked during working hours, someone could help you drive it and you make money from it.
Whatever it is, it's all a matter of perspective. As long as it's legal, ethical and doesn't hurt nobody.
Wake up, take off your rose colored lens, smell the coffee and go make that SHAME MONEY.
It’s Monday tomorrow go out there and proudly be You.
