Namechange: 313 will become Systema
As some of you might know, 313 started after being inspired by the warehouse rave culture that is native to Detroit. With 313, which is the area code of Detroit, we wanted to pay tribute to that culture of music. Not only did we identify with the values, the music we play at our parties originates from Detroit. Our intention was to bring our events as an homage to these values and music.
However, it has been brought to our attention by a Detroit native, that we are not able to fully comprehend nor understand what Detroit actually means. We were not there, we did not live it. Which is why we decided to change our name.
With our events we never meant to appropriate a culture, take ownership over something that wasn’t ours to take, or cause harm or pain in any way. But DJ Bone and his wife Ahne pointed out that with this name, we actually did.
We want to thank them for taking the time out of their schedule to have this open conversation with us. All of our organization is radically against any appropriation, racism, sexism, bigotry or any other form of oppression and we really appreciated that you pointed out what we could do to improve.
Our new name – Systema – is a word that appears in a similar form in almost all the languages in the world. In all these languages it means roughly the same: a set of things or principles which act together, as part of a mechanism or interconnected network to form a whole, together.
This definition spoke to us. At our events we together – Music, lights, crowd, organization – form a set of moving parts that work together to create something bigger than each of us could accomplish individually. And at the same time, the meaning of this word at the current time is something that we want to rebel against. Because most of the systems aren’t working for a lot of us. Systems should work for all of us, not just some of us. That way we can thrive, together – Systema
