“Today’s Teenagers” Andy Warhol’s cover for magazine published on January 29, 1965.

The cover is a montage of photos taken in a .

Famed Pop artist Andy Warhol was drafted to create the iconic cover art. Being asked to represent one’s generation was, for the cover models at least, fun: each of those pictured were teenage relatives of TIME employees (free labor!), who went with Warhol to a photobooth in Times Square.

One of them, Jim Straus, now 72, of Chicago, recalls hamming it up for the camera. “They asked me to make faces and stick my tongue out and cross my eyes, and so I did, having not really thought this through, that these are the photographs that are going to be used on the cover,” he says. “I remember taking it to school and walking around with it facing out.”

Do you know who was the first president to be photographed?

I thought it was Lincoln, but I was wrong.

John Quincy Adams the first president to be photographed using the very new Daguerreotype in 1843.

We have his thoughts on this new way of capturing images from his diary. He wasn’t a big fan, mainly because it was difficult sitting for a long time without blinking.

He said the photograph fell asleep as it caught his eyes closed. Have you ever had that happen?

Kings, presidents, and other wealthy people throughout history have had their images captures in art, often in paintings. That was out of reach for most people.

The photograph made it possible for the average man or woman to have their likeness captured and passed on to future generations.

As the technology of photography has advanced, how we have used it to cover presidents has changed as well.

From portraiture to communicate the image and character of a person, to the news of the moment, and the candid camera.

As cameras became cheaper and easier to use, more people started taking those same types of pictures to capture their moments.

Now with digital and the rise of social media we all have our image in the limelight so to speak.
