“When peace is threatened, the appropriate response is simply to open space. In doing so, the chaotic, conflicted human systems are invited to do what only they can do: self-organize to new and higher levels of complexity more in harmony with each other, their environment and their inner needs.”

And news of another exciting event from the Open Space list:

"Another great gathering is also being planned at International House in
New York from Friday January 15th to Sunday January 17th hosted by
Harrison Owen and Karen Davis with support from the Open Space Institute US and the entire team.

People from as far away as New Zealand, perhaps Paris and the UK, Canada and across the US are planning to attend. A timeless theme "Opening Space for High Performance and the Practice of Peace" , in a special place for an annual reunion packed with learning and sharing.
It has been going on for about 20 years. Harold Shinsato has made it super easy for us to register this year and we are so grateful. Hope many more will decide to join us in New York in January."

Join us for WOSonOS conversations!
The 23rd annual World Open Space on Open Space (WOSonOS), in Krakow, Poland, is coming up quickly on Sept 10-13. This year we add a new feature to the main event -- for all those who can't attend, but also for those who can. Qiqochat.com will support your hosting or joining an online session -- before, during or right after the Krakow gathering.
For instance, if you have a friend going to the in-person gathering in Poland, you might ask them to open up their computer, put it on a chair, and stream the session live so you can participate from wherever you are. Alternatively, you could ask your friend to post a topic on the marketplace wall in Krakow and you could lead your session via your friend's computer. Of course, it's also possible to post any topic you have passion for and convene an online session with friends and colleagues all around the world.
Join the Open Space Community Circle at qiqochat to participate...

QiqoChat is a fun and interactive way to ask friends and colleagues for their best insights and recommendations. A global circle for Open Space facilitators, and anyone else interested in learning, sharing and growing the practice. An always-on, always-available, open space for you to use and share…

30 Years .... And Counting!

Come this 4th of July it will be 30 years since something called Open Space Technology happened. At the time, we (that would be me, for sure) didn't have a clue what it was or where it was headed. Since then it seems like a lot of good stuff has come down. Of course we need to remember the learnings from the '60's - "Never trust anyone over 30." Well... we just got there!

Everybody should be well advised that what happens next is TOTALLY their responsibility... Or something.

What happens next is definitely your responsibility. Having entered into my 80th year, I am well past the age of discretion. But I do have a few thoughts that may, or may not, be germane.

I don't think this is the end of something. I do believe it is the beginning. And... There will always be a time when "the first timers" (as participants or facilitators) gets the WOW Experience (Thank you Tom
Peters). Kind of like the first ride on your bicycle. Millions of people have done it before you. But your First Ride is always unique (for you).

There will always be times when bits and pieces of our common experience in Open Space are held out as "singularities" - something strange and unique.

The latest version is called, "Liberating Structures (Thank you Henri!)." Wonderful Idea, I think, but just a very small part of the whole.

And for all those wonderful people who are attempting to wed Open Space to Agile (Dan et al you know who I am talking about) - I say Three Cheers! And I also hope that the day will come when it is recognized that truly Agile organization are fully, consciously, intentionally - self organizing. At that point, you don't have to wed anything to anything. Just be what you already are. Which is another way of saying that SCRUM (along with all the other "techniques") sound nice, but are yet one more example of "working too hard."

And What Next? Truly, I am out of crystal balls. But I rather think the beginning will begin when we call "Full Stop" on any attempt to organize anything. And in that momentary space (Open Space?) just notice what is
organizing all by itself. Amazing! And we didn't do a thing. Which leads naturally to the next question... How do we take advantage of the winds of our existence to bring our ships to harbors of fullness and greatness?

And then we may take a lesson from Sailors and the Sea. Sailors do not create the wind or the Sea. Although many have tried. All have failed. But they have learned to ride the winds and the seas to their advantage. We have the same opportunity.

On this 30th Birthday, and as I approach my 80th - Good Luck and Carry On!

ElRe7la is a 360 camp providing an extraordinary out-of-office experience for doers.
Through our 4-day unconventional travel experience we build a strong collaborative local community from our campers.
It all started because we were talking about all the events became the same, and that we need something new. People are always wearing different faces just to get what they want and go.
We think that travel shows the real people behind the faces, it strengthens their bonds beyond the emails and creates a community that can easily do business with each other at other points.
If you've been running a startup for 1 year or more, signup now to the event in May www.elre7la.com

We are delighted to invite you to come to the “White Town” of Belgrade, in the heart of the Balkans to participate in the 22nd World Open Space on Open Space. The University of Belgrade is ready to welcome you with all its facilities. Join the international community and the recently established Balkan Peninsula Open Space Institute that brings together Balkan facilitators for the first time. We are a host team of 10, many from the university, others from the local OS community and also from the broader region — everyone passionate about Open Space and excited to have you come to Belgrade.

The theme we are proposing is: “World Colliding; People Connecting”. By that we mean that many worlds will be coming together in Open Space for the first time. For example, people from the Open Space community will be joined by Open Education, Open Source and Agile communities with participants from agile organizations, Wikimedia, Khan Academy, Google, Ubuntu, WordPress, etc. Most are already familiar with Open Space Technology and we have been talking and planning around this event for many months. Everyone here is looking forward to welcoming the international Open Space community.

International Women's Day - 8th of March

Last year, I had the pleasure to co-host an Open Space event on "My identity… My memories… My future” for more than 60 Palestinian refugee women living in camps in Jordan, organized by GIZ and UNRWA.

Afterwards they kept on working on 3 important issues:
(1) preserving their Palestinian identity,
(2) reducing violence within families in camps, and
(3) advocating for women's independence in the camps.

An incredible Open Space event, organized by the GUC Student Union and Eslam Erman has facilitated it, took place on the 9th of February 2014 in The German University in Cairo. The aim of this event was “Opening space for Collaboration NOT Competition: Issues and Opportunities”.

This event was attended by more than 35 people from the student union, clubs and university council. They gathered in Open Space with no more agenda than what is laid out in that letter. An hour or so later, they had raised more than 18 major issues related to the main topic “Opening space for Collaboration NOT Competition: Issues and Opportunities”, and arranged them into a 3-session working agenda.

At the end of the 2-day conference, 17 documentations of the conversation sessions were on hand, 5 new project ideas had been born, a Facebook group established and 35 new friendships gained.

As a part of that, Mariam Wael , Kareem Hesham , Nashwa Ibrahim and Dina Amiri from Graphic Facilitation Egypt joined us, they listened deeply to groups and drew their key ideas in real-time.

Open Space Technology was created in the mid-1980s by organizational consultant Harrison Owen when he discovered that people attending his conferences loved the coffee breaks better than the formal presentations and plenary sessions. Combining that insight with his experience of life in an African village, Owen created a totally new form of conferencing.
