The final draft of my canine feral handpaw. For realz and for true!! Eventually this will be offered as a DIY project- the patterns are uploaded, the instructions are in progress, and hopefully soon there will be instructional videos posted as well. I'm also working on a sale pair made with nice material (this one is made with felt and cheap fur). It's been a long time coming. Stay tuned!!
For realz and for true, the finished pattern. Next will be a pair of paws made in this pattern for sale, as well as uploads of the pattern.

Last draft! Now editing the patterns and making them available for download.
Pardon the radio silence. It seems everything I'm working on these days is in an ugly duckling stage. Frustrated with the shape of my newest base, comparing it to that of a real wolf head using GIMP. Planning my next moves.

Help help I'm fiddling and I can't stop! I keep redoing the area around the eye. Which side do you like better, the left or the right?

Welcome to Sans Souci Studios!
This winged creature helped lead me to the furry fandom from my previous life as a paper mache mask artist. I incorporated it into a logo when I started Sans Souci Studios in 2000, basing it on an animal I dreamed about, a mashup of a wolf, a horse, and a bird of prey. Chasing its tail, it represented the playfulness I hoped to incorporate into my work. However I never quite felt comfortable using it, as it felt rather personal and private and well, weird. Then, when I belatedly stumbled onto the furry fandom in 2014 I found that it actually had a lot of company out there. I decided to take this as a sign.
Originally, I made masks in paper mache because that was the material about which I could most readily find information, and I made animal masks because that was what I liked doing. I had a fair bit of success, with my work appearing in video, theater and TV and being purchased by collectors around the world. Below, some of my favorites:
Paper mache cat masks by Sans Souci Studios at the 2009 Design Festa in Tokyo, Japan.
"Sneer", a paper mache wolf mask by Sans Souci Studios, dancing the tango with Eduardo Rodriguez of Cirque Du Soleil fame, at the 2009 Puja Gods and Monsters dance concert in Kaneohe, Hawaii.
"Sylvan", a paper mache deer mask by Sans Souci Studios, an earlier version of which was featured on the 2010 fall/winter catalog of "Elkha", a boutique men's and women's clothing label based in Melbourne, Australia.
"Rival", a paper mache unicorn mask in the video birthday card "Uniporn", produced by Lightborne Studios in Cinncinnati, Ohio in 2011.
My White Rabbit mask in the CSI episode "Malice in Wonderland", aired March 2012. My five minutes of fame.
On one hand, the variety and unpredictability of the roles my masks took on after they left my studio was delightful. On the other hand it made it extremely difficult to anticipate what future customers might want and plan accordingly. In addition, a key ingredient in my paper mache method had been discontinued and I just wasn't motivated enough to find a replacement. It was time to reevaluate the direction of my work. Friending and following all the maskmakers I could on Facebook, I learned that paper mache, the material in which I had invested so much time learning to use, is most often used for theater masks, due to its strength, light weight, and traditional appearance. I realized if I wanted to target my masks more specifically to theater, I would have to be willing to make whatever the customer wanted, usually under tight deadlines. At this point I also had to confront the fact that I had no desire whatsoever to make anything but animal masks.
It was also at this time that I stumbled upon the furry fandom, and realized that this was the kind of mask I had wanted to make all along. Though I feel intimidated by starting out in something so new at this time of my life, and by the list of new skills I will have to master- molding, casting, sewing, airbrushing, and so on and so forth- I am encouraged by the lively community and the many people who are so willing to share their own skill and expertise. Plus, my logo was tapping me on the head and telling me to get going. So, off I go!
