Story time! Grab a cup of tea (or your beverage of choice) and take a trip down memory lane with me. It will be a short trip, only about 2 years. Two years ago I was unemployed, and while we had our online shops and this page is my one true passion, sometimes you just need something that pays the bills. What I really needed was A Job. I was also a member of one of the most amazing, supportive networking groups in Fort Worth.
In January, 2017, I was at our monthly networking group, where the leader of the group gave us a task to create our “vision” for the year. Me: A job. I need a job. The group leader (Toni Allison, an amazing leader and mentor. We'll get back to her in just a minute when we travel back to the present day :) ) : Be more specific. What kind of job? What do you want to do? Where do you want to work? How much money do you want to earn? She had me write down on my sheet every detail of what I wanted. My protests of, “It doesn't matter! This job doesn't exist!” were unimportant to her. Write it down anyway. (At this point in the story, I should tell you that one of Toni's mantras is: “Write it down. Make it happen” And she isn't wrong!) So I wrote down: Email specialist at JCPenney headquarters in Plano, TX, earning $x a year. Now, I had already checked, and no, this position didn't exist at JCPenney. I took this 8 ½ x 11 piece of paper home and kept it where I could see it every day. I added the JCPenney logo to it, and kept watching the job boards. Within 2 weeks, almost to the day, a new position was posted: Email Specialist. By April, the job was mine!
Now let's hop in our DeLorean and travel back to the future... errr, the present. Yes, I still work at JCPenney, and I've joined yet another wonderful group of networking ladies at my company. As Women's History Month and National Craft Month (both March :) ) come to a close, I once again created a vision board – this time to honor creativity, art and crafting. And Toni leads a wonderful Life Purpose Vision Board course, that if you're in the Fort Worth area, can change your life! I know she helped change mine. :) ~Kat
