Friends - there is a new group in Bucksport - Brown Hall Arts Committee - and they will be bringing programs of every kind to Brown Hall, at the Elm Street Congregational Church, all year long! Their first is a Murder Mystery Comedy on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 1:00 pm. A Spaghetti Lunch is included in the modest admission price of $15 - appropriate since the murder takes place at a spaghetti supper! See the info below and don't miss this delightful comedy and a yummy lunch from the amazing cooks at the Congregational Church! A great way to enjoy a Saturday in January!
BUCKSPORT’S BROWN HALL CONTINUES ITS MISSION AS COMMUNITY SPACE
The Elm Street Congregational Church, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Stephen York, began offering its Community Space, Brown Hall, to the area with the Know Your Neighbor program in 2022. KYN brought a variety of events to the Brown Hall stage, including evenings with Town Officials and Community Members, Improv Theatre, Scottish Dance, Candidates Night for public office seekers, Forums on Matters of import to Bucksport residents and more, all in the spirit of author Wendell Berry’s theory of Community:
“A proper community, we should remember also, is a commonwealth: a place, a resource, an economy. It answers the needs, practical as well as social and spiritual, of its members - among them the need to need one another.”
To continue the work of Rev. Dr. York, who passed away late summer of 2023, The Brown Hall Cultural Arts Committee has been created, with a mission of programming events and occasions at Brown Hall for the community’s enjoyment, education, information and more. To that end, The Committee is delighted to announce the first such event at Brown Hall:
On Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 1:00 pm, Brown Hall Cultural Arts Committee is pleased to present the murder mystery “Dinner At Eight, Dead By Nine”, performed by members of the Bangor Community Theatre with support from the Bucksport Area Cultural Arts Society. A Spaghetti Luncheon will be served at 1:00 pm, and the play, set during a spaghetti dinner, will begin at 1:30 pm. This deliciously clever comedy mystery is the perfect choice for a winter afternoon. The action takes place around the head table of a banquet room where guests — and audience members -- will enjoy their meal.
But when the guest of honor, Eleanor Van Heusen, falls face first into her plate of spaghetti, the guests are suddenly witnesses to a murder! Luckily, Inspector Bungles is there to help solve this whodunit. To say the least, Eleanor wasn’t loved by all. In fact, all her family members and even the chef have reasons to kill her. Hilarity ensues as they each reveal their own murder plans, yet all claim innocence. With plenty of room for audience interaction, Dinner at Eight, Dead by Nine is a delight.
Including dinner and the play, the Suggested Donation at the door is $15. No reservations. Brown Hall is located at The Elm Street Congregational Church, at the corner of Elm & Franklin Streets, in Bucksport, Maine. Abundant free parking, handicapped accessible.
FMI call Catherine Ring at 207-951-6402.
Brown Hall Cultural Arts Committee is under the non-profit umbrella of Lighthouse Arts & Education, a 501(C)(3) not for profit organization, which also includes the G.R.A.C.E. Arts Program. Donations are gratefully accepted and can be mailed to Brown Hall Cultural Arts Committee, c/o Elm Street Congregational Church, P. O. Box 878, Bucksport, Maine 04416. The mission of The Bucksport Area Cultural Arts Society is to stimulate the arts within the community and schools, provide a suitable space for the performing arts which is also audience friendly, provide work and display areas that enable a strong community and academic arts program, and promote life-long learning experiences for the citizens of Bucksport.
The Bucksport Area Cultural Arts Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to support and promote the cultural and performing arts for Bucksport and surrounding communities.
The Bucksport Area Cultural Arts Society was formed in the spring of 1999, following in the footsteps of the Cultural Arts Auditorium Study Committee. This committee worked diligently together for months pursuing all facets of enriching our community by bringing the reality of a cultural arts center into being.
In 2003, the new Bucksport Performing Arts Center building, which is located at the Bucksport Middle School, opened. For many years BACAS brought music, plays and other cultural events to the Bucksport Performing Arts Center. The Center seats a maximum of 500 people.
Considering the building is now 20 years old, BACAS is coming together with the Town of Bucksport and the Bucksport School Department to assure that the Bucksport Performing Arts Center receives its much-needed safety and technology upgrades so that it will continue to be a base for which the arts can springboard for Bucksport, RSU 25 and our surrounding communities.
Now is the time to come together and ensure this venue can provide a high quality cultural and performing arts environment well into the future. Ensuring the continued viability of the Bucksport Performing Arts Center is of great importance to this group.

BACAS is actively seeking new members, pursuing available Grants and planning to bring events to the Center that will raise funds to update and upgrade not only the cosmetics of the center but the safety, lighting and sound as well. If you are interested in becoming a member or would like to donate, you may contact the society at [email protected]
Our next monthly meeting will be on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at 6pm at the Bucksport United Methodist Church located across from Seaboard Federal Credit Union.

On this day in Maine's history, August 22, 1919, Cyrus Hermann Kotzschmar Curtis dedicated the organ he purchased for Portland's Merrill Auditorium, the Kotzschmar Memorial Organ, in memory of his namesake, Hermann Kotzschmar. At the time of its purchase, it was the second largest organ in the world. The organ has five keyboards, one pedal board, 330 keys, and more than 7,000 pipes. Its windchest is large enough for approximately 50 people to fit inside even when the organ is being played. The Kotzschmar’s main organ chamber is big enough to hold about six tractor-trailers.
