My weekend highlight - taking time out to watch my niece's perform in their first-ever Diwali performance at the Aotea Centre Diwali Festival!! 💜💛💃🏽

So great after 2 years of not being able to have such gatherings...it was so hot that I had to have a fresh strawberry icecream to cool off!

Was a fun day out in the Auckland sun! 😎

** ADVANCE WARNING - IT'S A LONG POST! **

This week, I took my mum and grand-aunt (Moti) to the Mahatma Gandhi Centre/Auckland Indian Association (MGC/AIA) to place some offerings at the religious altar set in place for the 9-night Hindu Festival, Navratri.

My parents and I have spent a LOT of time at the AIA volunteering our time for various events - especially in the kitchen (which feeds into our love of food)!!

As a child, I remember going with my parents most nights after we had closed our fruit shop to the original "Gandhi Hall" at 156 Victoria Street in the central city to celebrate Navratri and do garba (i.e. the traditional dance of Navratri). The Gandhi Hall was built on 2 October 1955 - Mahatma Gandhi's birthday - marking a monumental occasion for the local Auckland Indian community.

In 1989, an opportunity to purchase the old Findlay's Bakery at 145 New North Road, Eden Terrace - the current home of the AIA. After receiving many generous donations from its members (including my parents and other extended family members), as well as additional funding from various organisations, the Mahatma Gandhi Centre was built & opened in 1994. It now provides a large community centre for celebration of cultural festivals, religious and social activities, weddings, concerts, a teaching space for a Gujarati school (Sunday School is what we called it growing up), a temple (Radha Krishna Mandir), and some street level retail and office spaces.

Back in 2012, I helped decorate the whole complex for the Navratri festival - bringing back many fond memories. Since then, I always try to go at least one day each Navratri to do some garba and get my fix of delicious vegetarian/Gujarati food!

This week, we managed to get to the MGC and it was the 10th day (Dusshera), which marked the end of Navratri and 20 days until Diwali. We spent most of our time in the kitchen, chatting with the many loyal volunteers who had been tirelessly working in the kitchen for the past 9 days. Every time I walk into the MGC kitchen and see the same people I've seen for the past 25+ years, I always wonder "who is going to do this important work for our community when they're not here?". My mum always says that when you cook food in a good mood and with love, it will always taste good!

Last night, the Auckland Indian Association awarded as the Best Community Organisation of the Year by the Indian Weekender newspaper at the Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame Awards for 2022! This is great recognition of the service of the MANY MANY volunteers who work behind the scenes at the AIA ("the unsung heroes") who have given their time and service to the betterment of our Auckland and New Zealand Indian Community...THANK YOU ALL...

Hi everyone! How are you all? Hope you've all had some time in the sun and enjoyed some downtime on this one-off public holiday in memory of Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

I've been a bit slow to update lately...still playing catchup post-Covid! More to come soon...

Today has been a sad day...waking up to the news that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had passed away overnight, and later going to the funeral of a special family friend. 💔

The Royal Family has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My grandfather, Lala Kika, used to work for the airline B.O.A.C (British Overseas Airways Corporation, later British Airways) and his love for the Royal Family was transferred to us. We used to follow the Royals like many others, watch the Queen's Christmas message, collected special souvenirs, went to Royal walkabouts when we could, visited Buckingham Palace, etc.

The service and dedication that the Queen has given the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth has been exemplary, and she is without a doubt one of the greatest leaders our world has ever seen.

Rest in Peace, Your Majesty 🤍🇬🇧

Happy Raksha Bandhan to all my brothers and sisters - wherever you may be 💖🕉️💙

Raksha Bandhan ("bond of protection") is an important Hindu festival celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Shravan (fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar). This festival is dedicated to the bond between sisters and brothers (including cousins and other family figures that hold this special relationship). Sisters tie a sacred thread (rakhi) on their brother's right wrist and offers him sweets. In return, the brother presents his sister with a gift. The sentiments expressed through Raksha Bandhan are those of maintaining family bonds 💞🙏🏽

Today (22 April) is Earth Day 🌏

We do our best to be as sustainable as we can be in our events, using only what we need to in order to create that WOW factor for those special occasions - without being wasteful and blowing the budget!

I always love using fresh flowers, especially for outdoor weddings. Here's a close-up of the fabulous fresh rose petals provided by for Suren & Kavita's civil wedding ceremony 3 years ago at Sorrento in the Park. A beautiful example of the cycle of plant life from Mother Earth 🌸🌹🌏

Small, mindful changes can have a big impact in our global efforts to protect our Earth 💚💙
