Do we wake them up? Or do we let them dream? Here you see a snapshot of my television screen. The brilliant young saxophonist is blowing a sizzling rendition of “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” I watched with pride as this young musician stunned the audience of America’s Got Talent. I met B. Thompson when he was Bryan Thompson, a little boy with a little saxophone and a very big dream. He didn’t have any formal lessons so he just listened and played what he heard. He’s the very definition of a prodigy. In a community theater production, I watched as he sat in on sessions with the extremely talented musicians there. He could barely be seen over the music stand! Today he tours all over the world. The astounding aspect of the story is that his folks didn’t “wake him up” from his dream. Many children out there are dreamers. Too often well-meaning adults “wake them up” with their own limited perspective of their potential. Although disputed in its origin,
“If the dream is big enough the facts don’t count “ is often quoted by my wife to young students and mentees. Daydreaming has often taken on a negative connotation. But very few great things are accomplished without first having a dream. Our classrooms, playgrounds, youth centers, churches and neighborhoods are filled with little dreamers. We can douse their dreams with the cold water of our perceived reality, or we can encourage them, guide them, support them and let them dream. Many will not reach that ultimate dream, but think of all the wonderful things they may learn along the way. Decades ago a little boy in Louisiana would put salt water and food coloring in old empty aspirin bottles and call it medicine. Thankfully nobody took it, 🙂but his parents indulged his fantasy. He dreamed of being a pediatrician. They didn’t say “you can’t “. I’m sure there are those who told B. Thompson “you can’t expect to compete with formally trained professionals”, but little Bryan’s dream was big. His mom didn’t say “you can’t”. So he did. It’s fitting that the song he played that evening was “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” The answer….EVERYTHING. Blow B Thompson! BLOW THAT HORN! Children are watching! Children are dreaming!

P.S. That kid with the dream of being a pediatrician……😉
