OVERVIEW & MESSAGE:

“Die Riel van Hip Hop” is a celebration of our rich diversity through the collaboration of the Riel Dance (one of the oldest recorded traditional dance forms) and Hip Hop (one of the most popular art and expression platforms for youth the world over). This innovative production incorporates the animated storytelling of the Riel Dance with the foundation of Hip Hop through cre

ative spoken word, dance, visual art and social commentary. The lead message of the production and the lyrics is focused on knowledge of identity and pride in creating new work and stories authentically. “When I initially started with this production it was aimed mainly at creating something that celebrates diversity in identity and telling our stories authentically while celebrating the success through the hardships. I would love for as many young people as possible who are pursuing a career in the arts and music industry to come and see this once-off production on the 29th of April 2017 at 15:00 at the Artscape Opera House.” ~ Shihaam Domingo, The Domingo Effect

CAST & CREW:

“Die Riel van Hip Hop” brings together legends and pioneers from the South African Hip Hop scene, including Hip Hop DJ and turntablist DJ Ready D and Hip Hop B-Boy Pioneer Emile YX? (Emile Jansen, of the Heal the Hood Project), and features Afrikaans singer and musician Frazer Georgio Barry (frontman of Tribal Echo), along with the phenomenal voice of acclaimed singer and actress Zenobia Kloppers on lead vocals. They join hands with some of the best Afrikaans Hip Hop lyricists who bring diversity in the exciting use of the Afrikaans language: Nam-Afrikaans rapper V.I.T.O. (VITO HEYN) from Namakwaland who has just written the first Afrikaans Hip Hop musical “Amper Famous” with David Kramer; Hip Hop with Soul singer and songwriter Jerome Rex from Cape Town; and Hakkiesdraad Hartman from George who has been instrumental in improving mathematics and science grades through Hip Hop, while developing youth in the art of Hip Hop, knowledge of self and Khoisan history. This stellar ensemble is completed with cabaret artist and writer Des-Lee McKenzie, who was recently nominated for a Woordtrofee; dancer and drummer Deniel T. Barry (of Tribal Echo); and a special appearance by writer, storyteller and Khoisan cultural activist Dr. Willa Boezak. The production boasts the winners of the 2016 ATKV Riel Dance Competition (the Riel dancers, Die Betjies van Betjiesfontein) and four of Cape Town’s best Hip Hop dancers; and features live music by the TopDog SA4 band, graffiti on stage by artist Mak1one (Maxwell Southgate) and animation by Amy Brown of Last Born Pictures.
