Celebrating ERICK HAWKINS' birthday with a magical picture of Erick as 'he snowing' from the seventh movement 'they snowing' part of his favorite dance 8 Clear Places. Hawkins states " Scientific truth, correctness, and efficiency in movement can be the only keystone to beauty. Without this efficiency, nothing historically and mistakenly called beautiful is actually beautiful. The beautiful must be true. Thus, the beautiful on this first level in dance art is not defined by personal or cultural whim or precedent or usage, but by criterion that can be recognized by any human being anywhere. The first level, then, is movement based on natural science. The second level is that movement so based on natural laws creates beauty. The third level follows philosophers Schiller and Marcuse: 'Only beauty leads to freedom.'

The next installment of Lunch with Lucia exploring the visionary work of composer Lucia Dlugoszewski features percussionist Dustin Donahue in conversation with curator Dustin Hurt, focusing on Dlugoszewski's radical reimagining of percussion through her "orchestra of invented instruments."
These instruments-designed in collaboration with sculptor Ralph Dorazio-include square drums, unsheltered rattles, ladder harps, and tangent rattles.
Rather than isolated objects, they were arranged into full choirs with subtle variations in tuning, resonance, and material. The talk will explore their design, use in choreography with Erick Hawkins, and the reconstruction of lost works like 8 Clear Places and Geography of Noon through archival and material research.
Featured here are images of archival slides taken by Peter Kaplan, showing Dlugoszewski surrounded by her percussion instruments. These photos, held at the Library of Congress, offer a rare visual window into her instrumentarium and her hands-on performance practice.

After intensive research and study of the composer Lucia Dlugoszewski and the instruments she invented, these were recreated for MaerzMusik 2024 by Thomas Meixner. Ensemble Musikfabrik is delighted that some of them will be used once again in the upcoming concert at the WDR Funkhaus, where they will be playing her piece "Depth Duende Scarecrow Other".

Legendary dancer-choreographer Erick Hawkins gave an "endless bow" for his friend, the artist-architect Friedrich Kiesler on December 30, 1965 at his funeral in N.Y. A former student of Hawkins, Gstettner choreographs and performs about his "endless bow" through the exhibition rooms of the Kunsthaus Zug.

Klangforum Wien performs TONIGHT at Vienna's ImPulsTanz Festival with contemporary choreographers Weronika Pelczyńska from Warsaw and Vienna-based Elizabeth Ward. Together with their dancers, these two choreographers will reinterpret the soundscape of Polish-American composer Lucia Dlugoszewski performed LIVE by Klangforum Wien at Odeon, Vienna. The production follows Klangforum Wien 's award-winning CD recording Lucia Dlugoszewski: Abyss and Caress. Dlugoszewski studied with John Cage and Edgar Varèse before forging her own path. For over 40 years, her music has been closely intertwined with modern dance icon Erick Hawkins. Dlugoszewski, a child of Polish immigrants, was a keen-to-experiment artist composer and inventor of many various instruments. Dlugoszewski's distinctive compositions are based on her sensitivity for choreography, body and stage performance.

Precious moments performing Lucia Dlugoszewski’s legendary Song for the Poetry of Everyday Sounds with amazing artists and friends Katherine Duke and Kate Doyle at MaerzMusik Festival in Berlin, in March 2024

I was reciting the score’s poem while Katherine and Kate were producing the most exquisite, delicate and beautiful sounds Lucia envisioned, using everyday objects such as bells, paper sheets, metal bowls, glass beads, balloon, keys and bubbling water to clear our minds and ears amidst busy festival concert schedule
