On this International Day for Persons with Disabilities we will debunk 5 common myths about persons with disabilities (PWDs), along with explanations to dispel them:
: People with disabilities are dependent on others for everything.
: While some individuals may need support with certain tasks, many people with disabilities live independently and lead fulfilling lives. With the right accommodations and support, they can work, travel, and take part in all aspects of society.
: Disability means a lack of ability or talent.
: People with disabilities have diverse talents and skills. Disabilities do not define a person's capabilities. Many individuals with disabilities excel in arts, sports, education, and business. What matters is opportunity and access to resources.
: All disabilities are visible.
: Many disabilities are invisible, such as mental health conditions, chronic pain, learning disabilities, and cognitive impairments. Just because a disability isn’t immediately visible doesn't mean it isn't real or impactful.
: People with disabilities are always in need of pity or charity.
: People with disabilities do not want pity; they want equity, equality, inclusion, respect, and access to opportunities and resources. They are active contributors to society and should be treated with dignity, just like anyone else.
: Persons with disabilities cannot work or hold leadership positions.
: People with disabilities are capable of working in a wide range of fields, including leadership roles. With reasonable accommodations and inclusive work environments, they can thrive in various professions.
Disrupting these myths helps to promote a more inclusive, respectful, and empowered world for persons with disabilities.
