Seven Years of Gratitude, Growth, and Memories

Seven years ago, I made one of the hardest decisions of my life: closing a family business that had thrived in the events sector for over 30 years. We had just received devastating news, my father urgently needed a life-saving transplant. Priorities were clear, I chose to spend those months with family, not on event sites.
While the decision itself was straightforward, the aftermath was something I didnât anticipate. Our clients showered us with understanding and heartfelt messages, but one phone call stood out. A client we still work with today said, âWe canât lose you, Jack. Youâre part of our extended team. How can we support you?â (I cant remember the exact words but they were similar to that!)
That call kept me in the industry I love. I transitioned to freelance for them, allowing me to balance family time with my professional commitments.
Fast forward to today, and the story has a happy continuation: yesterday, I celebrated another birthday with my dad, thanks to a successful transplant. While he misses the events industry, weâre all grateful for what truly matters, having him here to make more memories.
This morning, as messages come in from colleagues and clients celebrating seven years of our new business Saward Marketing & Events, I found myself reflecting on the relationships that shaped this journey. That one clientâs belief in me seven years ago became the foundation for everything weâve built since.
If thereâs a takeaway, itâs this: cherish the people around you, they are lifeâs true constants. And remember, business isnât just about transactions; itâs about relationships that uplift and inspire. Today, I reached out to that client again to say thank you. Without them, we wouldnât be here, celebrating this milestone.
