Virtual Event Production for the CWA with Surprise Guest, Tommy Caldwell
*Sound on* Whew what a month! Last week we wrapped up planning and producing our first-ever fully virtual event for the Climbing Wall Association. And it was really special too: a workshop to help climbing gym owners and senior leadership learn from one another and business experts to help survive COVID and hopefully thrive for years to come (we called it the "Survive & Thrive Workshop"). Basically doing our small part to help save climbing gyms, who are at the heart of the industry and mean so much to so many people.
5 weeks of planning (normally an event of this scale and complexity would take at least 3 months). 150 paying attendees. 20 paying sponsors. 6 different software. 2 days of live programming including: keynotes, panels, breakouts, breakout summaries with delegates from each breakout then presenting, virtual brainstorming white boards, networking and forum discussions, virtual exhibits, gamified engagement and contests, pre-recorded custom instructional videos, etc. We really pushed the envelope on virtual experiences and learned A TON along the way.
And then, 1 hour before the closing keynote is about to begin we get word from EDELRID that Tommy Caldwell can do a cameo! Nevermind the weeks of tech rehearsals and speaker prep. He jumps on 2 minutes before we go live, he's got his camera and video off until voila, the whole event wraps up with a surprise guest appearance from someone with a truly resonating message about overcoming adversity.
A huge shout out to the CWA for entrusting in us this magical experience and for being such a joy to work with. We worked our butts off and I am humbled to have been a part of such an awesome event and inspiring community.

How to install a Tension Grindstone Mk2 hangboard
Shout out to Tension Climbing for hooking up our "global HQ" with a hangboard and for making the best hangboards in the world! Get 15% off a Tension hangboard with the custom promo code HANGBOARDEXPERIENCES15.
Here's a quick tutorial on how to install a hangboard.
Installation time: 45 minutes.
Supplies:
• 5.5" wide x 1.5" thick wood cut to the width of my door frame (40 3/4") for aesthetic purposes and to ensure it covered two studs
• Stud finder, blue painters tape to mark studs, pencil to mark wood
• Four 3" phillips wood screws to screw wood to wall (2 per stud)
• Drill with correct drill bit
• Two 1.5", 2" and 3" wood screws to attach hangboard to the wood (I invested in gold colored ones so they'd blend better versus opting for the screws the hangboard came with)
• Measuring tape to center hangboard
• Level to make sure gravity works evenly (my doorframe was NOT level!)
• Step ladder
• 2 really good friends 😊🙏
Hope that's helpful! Thank you again to Tension for making training possible during the pandemic.
Pretty awesome view from our office window today...
