Her favorite restaurant in New York City is Shukette in Chelsea because of the seasonal labneh— however, she gave Sally’s in New Haven a close second because “it’s the BEST PIZZA in the country.” 🍕 She says, “I am obsessed with good food. But I also know the atrocity that is the American food system. Though considering said atrocity can often be frustrating and hopeless, it’s exciting and inspiring to work with a team that’s as passionate not just about awesome food, but also about being on the right side of the conversation.”

🧑‍🌾 It’s always nice to put a face to the farm—so today we’re takin’ some time out to introduce you to Dagele Brothers Produce Co., a farm family based out of Florida, New York who have been working the land since 1919. Right now, we’re using Dagele Brothers Produce Co. produce in dishes like our Honey Mustard Asparagus, and our Orzo Salad with Kale Pesto, both available in our most recent iteration of the Spring Farm Feast.

It’s estimated that in New York City alone, one person produces about 746 pounds of waste a year 🚮 That number alone warrants concern for how we live and operate our day-to-day. Now apply that number to larger-scale companies, and specifically food companies. Sustainability has become a bit of a buzzword lately, but we’re here to practice it in our everyday systems.

🌈 Meet : a free contemporary art after-school program based right here in NYC. Their work centers around under-resourced neighborhoods with limited or no access to the arts or arts education. We first met the folks at Wide Rainbow through a mutual friend and were able to pilot an essential meal program with their team in the spring of 2020.

With Wide Rainbow’s help, we were able to deliver nutritious, sustainable meals to schools with their program, to ensure kids could have something wholesome and nourishing to keep them going during classes.

Join us on April 27th at 97 Montrose Ave to kick off the new season with a block party, where a portion of all proceeds will be donated directly to the folks at . We’ll see you there 👋

HER FARM, HER FOOD RECAP 🌷 Last month we were lucky enough to celebrate a night of the rising female voices in hospitality. We supported .jane with to make an ingredient focused menu for the evening highlighting some of the amazing local produce and provisions.

We joined at in an evening of inspiring renowned female chef panelists, as well as farmers from NY who have committed their careers to incorporating sustainability within their culinary practices.

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH HIGHLIGHT 💫 Meet Shay Francis, the multi-talented Multi Site Manager here at Green Top. We’re so lucky to round out this month with her words on what it means to be a woman in leadership:

“Working hard to accomplish goals and having the receipts to back it up. It also means showing the utmost support to the ones that may be below you in position. Women are categorized as a minority and when you’re a black woman, you’re a double minority, so most of the time, we know what it feels like to be looked down upon and we should take that as a learning moment to not treat others a way we would not want to be treated. The keyword here is LEADERSHIP, not being a boss!”

When we launched Green Top Grocery, only one burrito could be found in the product line-up: our classic Bacon Egg & Cheese 🥓 After months of glowing feedback, and a few cravings of our own, we put out a full-on menu of wraps and burritos for more options and less hassle. -Dal Palak, a yellow lentil and spinach dal made with an ancient spice combination and tons of love. She pairs hers with rice or naan for a super easy, vegan weeknight dinner.
