What's the Secret?
Since you asked! The secret to this technique is to use a really really bright flash to freeze the action. The rest gets a little technical, but here goes: I'm using a very bright and big battery operated strobe, the Phottix (Phottix Professional Photo Accessories / Phottix Hong Kong) Indra 500 at max power and some bright LED video lights (Yongnuo 300 and 600 series LED) with red gels for the painting effect. Camera doesn't really matter that much but I am using a Sony A7RII with the Zeiss 16-35mm F/4 at f8.0 with a very dark neutral density filter (ND16) to cut down the ambient light. Exposure time is 5 seconds at ISO 100. If enough people ask, I'll make a tutorial video to show how it's done.
