Irises have a long and vibrant history of spiritual symbolism, reaching back to Ancient Greece. The flower is named after Iris, the goddess of the rainbow who acted as messenger for Zeus and Hera - carrying messages between heaven and earth on her arc across the sky. Purple irises were also associated with female souls journeying to their next life in Heaven while Christian tradition linked them specifically with Maryโs sorrow at Jesus' suffering during his Passion & Resurrection journey. Today they are still used to honor both Virgin Mary's pain over losing somebody she loved deeply alongside invoking protection from powerful deities like Zeus through a bright reminder of an unforgettable Greek myth!
