Eclipse, 2024
Christopher Durang (1949-2024) was truly one of the biggest reasons I fell in love with theatre. Rest in Peace, Chris.

Haven't posted or taken many pictures lately. This is from last month at my cousin's house in the Berkshires. The first two shots were five minutes apart, with about 20 minutes each between the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.
I first became enamored of artist James Turrell - whose "sculptures" are works using the medium of light - when the Guggenheim brought his art, including a new commission changing their entire rotunda into a vertical tunnel of morphing light, to New York back in 2013.
Four years later, I saw an article in the New York Times that the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) was opening a new building on their campus featuring permanent installations of his work.
I finally had cause to be in the area today, so squeezed in a trip to the museum. Two of the most popular works needed reservations, and was I able to secure one, and then fortunate while there that there was a cancelation on the other. Those two pieces "Perfectly Clear" and "Hind Sight" were the perfect polar opposites in sensory perception; the first, the biggest, flattest field of light I had ever experienced; the second, the darkest room I've ever been in, in which it takes your eyes almost 10 minutes to adjust to the pitch black to the point where you can faintly make out a grey circle (I was told, it appeared as either a rectangle or oval to me).
The Turrell works are all "No Photo" areas, so I downloaded a few.

Confirms my observations. Theatre needs to give people a reason to see EVERY show now.
Hitting Theater Hard: The Loss of Subscribers Who Went to Everything
The subscription model, in which theatergoers buy a season’s worth of shows at a time, had long been waning, but it fell off a cliff during the pandemic.
This sums up so much of what I personally believe, and what I agree needs to happen to keep regional theatre alive.

Spice Drawer Sunset (2023)
Happy 40th Anniversary to Carolyn Dorfman Dance. I was fortunate to work with them as Production Manager & Lighting Director from 2001-2003. I got to travel with them from New York to Miami, and twice to Poland.
I still have vivid memories from my time with them, especially being in Poland when the Iraq War started, visiting Auschwitz, and designing the original lighting for the premiere of her brilliant piece "Echad (One)," in 2002. Makes me realize that at 21, that wheel is old enough to drink legally.
Congrats, and M***e at the Gala tonight to my many friends and past colleagues in attendance.
Pretty amazing full double rainbow from the Magic Kingdom to the middle of Seven Seas Lagoon to cap off an awesome vacation week at Disney.
Want to take that next step towards a high-level lighting design career?
The mission of Hemsley Lighting Programs is to help bridge the gap for young designers between their educational environment and the beginnings of their professional careers. Like Gilbert Hemsley, Howell Binkley embodied the same passion for helping young designers as well as the same joyous persona...

‘Phantom of the Opera,’ Broadway’s Longest-Running Show, to Close
The theatergoing audience has been slow to return after the pandemic lockdown, and the show hasn’t been selling well enough to defray its running costs.
