Over a century has passed and the swath of rock that was left behind is a stark reminder of the magnitude of Frank Slide. It’s wild to think that the rock slide, originating from Turtle Mountain in the background, happened in 100 seconds. It was an event that forever changed the lives and landscape of the area.

Sharing my love and respect for nature with my children has been an amazing part of being a parent. Watching them explore and learn from the outside world fills me with happiness. This little guy is always happiest outside. He loves to crush summits while telling stories and asking questions along the way.

Every spring, I watch and wait for the ice to melt on our glacial lakes. I’ve been missing kayaking since the lakes froze over last December. The wait is almost over and soon I’ll be back out on the water surrounded by the wild beauty of my favourite places.

Mountains and mosquitos. They don’t often go hand in hand, but they were both out in full force on this camping trip. I had gorgeous views and a flying insect fan club wherever I went. Luckily, the incredible scenery made up for the wild amount of mosquitos. I normally would edit out the little insects, but I decided to embrace the bugs in the photo because I have never, in all my time spent here, seen anything like it. It’ll be my souvenir from the trip 😆🦟🏔

Lake Minnewanka // Minni-waki
Breathtaking scenery every single day of the year.
Some of my favourite memories from last year were spent on the water and shores of Lake Minnewanka.

Lake Minnewanka owes its striking turquoise colour to glacial/rock flour suspended in its water.
Rock flour is created as a glacier moves along a rocky surface, eroding it into small clay-sized particles. These tiny particles eventually make their way into mountain lakes via runoff or watercourses.

My first mountain bike adventure for the year was spent exploring the Ya Ha Tinda. Its name means “Mountain Prairie” in the Stoney language and it’s a perfect description of this stunning landscape. The area is filled with beauty, wildlife, and history. I was completely blown away by the views! They were incredible in every direction 🏔

Even when they’re shrouded in clouds, the mountains are still my “happy place.” ☁️🏔

Nature, in any form, is my favourite place and I’ve always been on a path to learn more from the land. I spent part of my life completing a degree in forestry and working in the field. Even before my forestry days, I loved a good plant ID book 🌿🌲🍃 I have quite a few in my collection, but if you live or visit the Bow Valley, a great book to start with is Mike Potter’s “Central Rockies Wildflowers” pocket guide. It’s small, light, and easy to pack along on the trail. It’s also organized by wildflower colour and shape, making plant ID quick and straightforward 📚

This sweet little bird was cute, curious, and keeping a close eye on my lunch. Their name ‘Whiskey Jack’ comes from their Algonquin name ‘wiskedjack.’ You might also know them as a Grey/Gray Jay or Canada Jay. These hardy little creatures lay their eggs in winter in well insulated nests. They are smart and interesting birds who seem to enjoy watching people as much as people enjoy watching them.

Mule deer roaming the Badlands 🌵
These beautiful animals look very similar to their white-tailed deer relatives, but mule deer have larger ears, a bounding/bouncing gait, and they have a short tail with a black tip.

Spray Valley views 🏔 Did you know that this area was part of Banff National Park from 1902-1930? In 2000, Spray Valley Provincial Park was created, covering 358 square kilometres. It’s an area filled with stunning scenery and no shortage of places to explore.

“Nature is our biggest ally and our greatest inspiration.” — David Attenborough

I’ve always had a strong connection to nature and a massive respect for our home planet (and beyond). Earth Day is a good time to reflect on that connection. We borrow this land from future generations and we can all dig a little deeper to take care of our planet in a way that promotes sustainability, stewardship, and respect for our natural world.

Castle Mountain is one of my absolute favourites for xc skiing. The trails are fantastic and dog friendly. Definitely a plus when you have a doggo who always wants to be with his humans. 🐶
