Because I’ve completely forgot to schedule posts on social media for a month, here’s a picture of when I was a bride. I remember the feeling of just needing the whole day to go perfectly (it was our second ceremony so I wanted to iron out the kinks from our first one). Now, on the other side I realize this was just one day. But in the moment it appeared to be the most important day on the planet. And I wish I had a mini version of myself there to execute the day for me. That’s why I became a wedding planner, no one cared enough for me as a bride so I wanted to be that for someone else.
Also quick aside for the extremely talented who captured both our weddings. I highly suggest her to all my LA brides. ❤️

Prospective client asked a GREAT question the other day! What counts as the “wedding budget” when determining the service fee for partial or full planning?

This is different for all planners, and sometimes differs based on client. But it’s safe to say the cost of your venue, catering, and all your vendors is included in that number. When you get a true planner, you’re receiving design implementation and a right hand woman who will see your vision through to reality.

Is it high fashion, or a wedding? Getting your groom and his mates ready for the day is just as important as anything else! Here are some tips for your grooms people on wedding day:
1. Don’t start their day as early as brides
2. Have them meet for food, they won’t be late to that
3. Ask if your planner will steam all apparel on wedding day
4. Secure a location with activities and snacks they love
5. Have them take ownership and part in the wedding (escorting people to their seats, speaking or program activities, watching after the rings, etc.)

Why we LOVE wedding planning.

I’ve always been a helper. In school as a kid, I’d help my peers do their homework, or be a big contributor to a group project. By the time I was a young adult, I was the social butterfly at sorority events, and running student government. There was always something big that needed to be planned and worked on and I was going to be the one to take it on. I began learning to facilitate and work with staffs of other great talented people and it all kind of clicked. So I began event planning.

While I’ll happily plan any party (big or small), I fell into weddings because they are more stressful than your typical party. There are more emotions, people, traditions, and wildcards. And ask anyone who knows me… I thrive in a stressful mess. Knowing I can get my couples to the great “I do,” is literally the greatest joy I have. I never expected a tip or a shout out… the greatest reward is the smiles on their faces at grand exit and the tired of their feet after a long night of partying. So full service planning was just ideal.

I’m a shopping buddy, a suggestion maker, a vendor coordinator, a design inspector, a friend and sometimes unofficial therapist, and so much more. How couldn’t I love it? Oh and it helps that I LOVE…LOVE!

Meet Shay Shay is the founder and owner of Peony Effect. She is a California native who has lived
and planned events throughout the US. By trade, Shay is a lawyer. She’s worked on complex cases and deals for about a decade, but no matter what issue she resolved for her clients in the law office, she noticed that there were issues her friends and family needed solved more: planning their events. From salon launches to weddings and bachelorette parties, Shay became the go to for everyone she knew. And she LOVED it.
And then she noticed she could never find the services she wanted for her own events. When she was the bride in her first wedding (a royal affair in Dallas), she’d taken on the entire event because she couldn’t find a planner that met her standards. The moving pieces of an out of state wedding were too complex for many. A few years later, she was hosting her own divorce party in Birmingham Alabama with guests coming in from around the country. She could find coordinators for her ideas, but never planners. Finally when she met and married the
love of her life in LA, the multicultural and religious aspects of the 3 day event required more attention and effort than the planners she hired could provide. She wished there was someone who could make it easier to be the host of her parties, and the idea of Peony Effect was born. While she still practices law in Los Angeles, she is having the time of her life coordinating this business.
Shay lives in Los Angeles with her husband Brent and their two dogs Pepsi, and Leo.
