On December 16, 2020, Helen Jackson passed away at the age of 101 in Marshfield, Missouri. Ms. Jackson was the last known living widow of a Civil War soldier--James Bolin who served in the 14th Missouri Cavalry. In 1936, her father suggested she stop on the way home from school to help the 93 year old Bolin with chores. She was 17. He did not believe in charity and offered to marry her, so that she would receive his Civil War pension. It was the Great Depression with few opportunities. She accepted but continued to live at home. She said Mr. Bolin genuinely wanted to help her. He passed away in 1939, but she never applied for the pension, not wanting people to think she took advantage of him. She never remarried.

Why does cannabis tend to cause such a wide variety of relief for people, & what is really going on in our bodies to cause this to be felt? The answer is that inside of every human(& some animal species) there is a system of receptors on nerve endings throughout the body that bind to the cannabinoids present in cannabis.

Research has shown that the role of this Endogenous Cannabinoid System(ECS) is to maintain a state of homeostasis throughout the body. The ECS is made up of CB1 and CB2 receptors found on nerve endings & cell walls.

Why then would our bodies have a system of receptors just for something found in the cannabis plant? The short answer is the ECS is not just for phytocannabinoids (cannabinoids found in plants). Our bodies naturally produce their own cannabinoids (endocannabinoids) that interact with the ECS. The most commonly known of these are Anandamine and 2-AG(2-Arachidonoylglycerol), & while there is a lot of research that needs to be done it seems that a few of the things they are responsible for in the body are appetite stimulation, immune system health, & pain management.

When cannabis is consumed the phytocannabinoids like THC & CBD bind to these receptors by mimicking the endocannabinoids. This then causes the nerve to either fire or not fire. Metaphorically, imagine cannabinoids as keys that unlock various functions in our ECS.

So why then do we need cannabis if our bodies are already producing these endogenous cannabinoids? Well, Dr. Ethan Russo, Director of Research and Development of the International Cannabis & Cannabinoids Institute, proposed a theory in 2001 that he has continued to research. His theory of Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CED) suggests that due to environmental and health factors the body may not produce enough endocannabinoids leading to conditions & diseases that many find relief from through cannabis.

One thing Dr, Russo’s research also suggests is that cannabis is not the only way to treat this CED. It seems that there are things we can do to promote higher production of endocannabinoids in the body like eating healthier, exercising, not adding any extra stress to your life, & singing to name a few.
