French Gulch Hee Haw Fiddler Returns
JANA JAE TO BRING QUARTET CONCERTS TO
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA—Fiddling Meets the Classics!
Longtime Redding resident Cherie Gans welcomes her sister,
well-known violinist/fiddler and former Redding resident, Jana
Jae, home for concerts in the area. Jana joins Cherie to bring the Compass Quartet to Northern California, featuring Debussy and Prokofiev plus some hoedowns!
Jana Jae Greif was instrumental in the early success of the Redding string program, later earning widespread recognition for her work on TV series Hee Haw and Nashville Now, as well as international touring with Buck Owens, Roy Clark,
Chet Atkins, the Oak Ridge Boys and many other famed artists. Jana learned to fiddle at her grandpa’s knee, with schottisches in the kitchen, but her classical side lead to free education in Colorado, Interlochen, and Vienna, studying
under Anton Landler and Rafael Druian and graduating magna cm laude with a degree in Violin Performance and being concertmaster of the Boise Philharmonic.
Moving to California, Jana taught strings at Shasta College
and Redding elementary schools, growing the enrollment from 5 to 105. Her most famous area student was young Scott Joss, of Merle Haggard fame. Jana started our own Fiddlers’
Association in Redding, putting the area on the map as a music and fiddling hub. Clear Creek, her bluegrass band with fiddle, guitar, piano, banjo, and bass became a sensation at the French Gulch Hotel. When Buck Owens came to perform
in Redding, he asked Jana to play on stage with him, then later when his fiddler was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident, Buck remembered Jana and eventually hired her. She became a member of the Buckaroos and a regular on
Hee Haw with her blue fiddle, long black hair and short skirts. Later Jana formed her own band, Hotwire, with her own amalgamation of music and toured the entire country. Her
extensive solos with symphonies incorporated both Bach and bluegrass, returning home twice to Shasta Symphony. Her sister Cherie encouraged her to take up a new musical endeavor—chamber music. This new world for Jana saw her
quickly rise to the top of any quartet or quintet playing Beethoven to Ravel. Jana and Cherie started the Idaho Chamber Music Workshop on the shores of Payette Lake,
which naturally was followed by the Hells Canyon Fiddle Camp. They have played chamber music in Italy, France, England, Argentina, and Romania.
The sisters have teamed with Sherry Hanson of Fortuna and Barbara Johnston of Portland to create the Compass Quartet which has been together for three years. Coming from the four points of the compass—Tulsa, Scappoose, Fortuna, and
Redding--they still manage to have a great time perfecting the classical quartet repertoire.
Three concerts will be given:
The
Debussy and Prokofiev II String Quartets will be performed,
with hot fiddling and Christmas carols for the season.
Bach, blue & bluegrass? Northern California welcomes Jana,
Cherie, and the Compass Quartet for the December 16-18
weekend.

The Western Open Family

When we reflect upon the 35 years of the Western Open Fiddle Championships, it is the people who have made it so special. Many of the members of the Western Open Committee have been on board for every contest. We've watched some of our "fiddle kids" on their journeys as they competed all the way from the Peewee through the Open Division. Many of those "kids" are now fiddle teachers, and it is with great joy that we watch the children follow in their parents' footsteps on the Western Open stage. There will be people in the audience this year who have attended every contest, as well as those who are here for the very first time. Every year there are new contestants and new audience members, all of whom we welcome to our "Fiddle Family." We say to all, "Welcome!" and we look forward to sharing the magic of old time fiddle music with you
