I rarely stray into the world of politics, but this piece was commissioned for a line of audio greetings cards three years ago and it seems particularly apt right now. (It’s just a caricature, not an invitation for political debate. Cheers! 😊)

Some fun couples I drew this afternoon at Jen & Robert’s beautiful Wynyard Hall wedding. Each one was drawn using Tombo twin tip brush pens and Pentel chisel tip markers. Five minutes per person. Big thanks to for the booking!

…and special thanks to the lovely bride, who very kindly allowed me to perform a little earlier so I could watch the Euros final with my family. Thanks Jen. 😊

Tying the knot in the near future? My caricatures are always stacks of fun at weddings, providing fun and hilarious entertainment for friends and family alike. DM me for pricing and availability! All north east UK covered. 💍

I had a great reaction to the Christopher Reeve sketch I posted last week, but there was also confusion from some when I said I wasn’t altogether happy. “What’s wrong with it?” kind of thing.

Just to be clear, I’m not being overly modest; on any sketch there are always elements that I think could be tweaked in order to strengthen the likeness and harmonise the design. These usually aren’t huge changes (if something requires that much work I’ll usually abandon it on the drawing board), just subtle adjustments to make the drawing work better generally.

Here’s a before/after of said sketch. The modified version is the one with the red bullet points.

I’m not typically one for drawing footballers, my disinterest in sports generally is fairly legendary. That said, I think Anthony Gordon has a really interesting look and I was keen to have a go at exaggerating his features.

Many caricaturists will tell you not to give guys big eyelashes, as if that will somehow make them less manly or something. That’s bullsh*t. Work with what’s there, accentuate the obvious and you won’t go far wrong.

…for what it’s worth I also think Gordon’s an excellent player, and hope he gets to see more action for England in the Euros. ⚽️

Swipe for my process steps, and original reference photo. DM me if you’re interested in buying the original art! 🤙

Absolutely NO ONE was cooler to me as a kid in the 80s than Marty McFly. The hair, the clothes, the guitar, the hot girlfriend… I wanted to be him so much. Just the very idea of skateboarding to school in the California sunshine whilst listening to Huey Lewis was a million miles away from my life in north east England, and I found it completely intoxicating.

Here’s a coloured pencil sketch of this very scene I did earlier today. I might tighten it up and graphite it later in the week if I get a chance.

Caricature sketch commission I did last year, as a concept test for a client project that never came to fruition. I think it’s safe to share it now.

I’m forever yammering on about how no one is “un-caricaturable” and I still hold to that. But with some individuals you definitely have to dig a little deeper to find their unique design and characteristics. Actor Brandon Routh is someone I’ve drawn a few times over the years, with varying degrees of success. This is probably the closest I’ve ever gotten.

Superman fan? Foaming at the mouth for Routh? (Yeah, I know it’s terrible…) This sketch is for sale, DM me and let’s talk! 🤙

Morning warmup sketch of the much-missed John Mahoney as Marty Crane. Swipe for reference. I’ll admit I‘ve found it hard to warm to the new series of Frasier, despite the best efforts of all involved. But then again the classic show is an almost impossible act to follow.

Frasier fan? Want to own this sketch? DM and and let’s talk! 🤙

I repost this one from time to time, if only to have another moan about losing the high res version in a data loss incident a few years ago. Backup drive? Where we’re going, we don’t need a backup drive… 😭

…and yeah, it’s another Father’s Day reference. Granted, Doc’s kids are only in BTTF3 for about 30 seconds (and Verne was doing weird pointy stuff for most of that), but it still counts I reckon.

In honour of Father’s Day I thought I’d reshare some of my favourite Dad-themed drawings from the last few years. (Yeah, the whole RoboCop/Jimmy relationship is a little tenuous and I’ll admit Cliff from Home Alone 2 is a big stretch; but when not smooching with guests at The Plaza he presumably has family, right? 😁)

“Thank you so much!!! Alex loved it! She cried (she doesn’t do that often).”

Something a little different today, this is a commissioned caricature I completed this week for one of my wedding clients. Emma had me draw her friend Harry (who sadly passed away in January) as a gift for Harry’s wife. I’m always touched when asked to honour a loved one’s memory through my art. ❤️

Have a friend, colleague, or significant other you would like me to draw? These marker drawings begin at £75.00 plus postage, I ship worldwide. All I need are some decent photos to work from. 😊

I used to work with a guy who would swear blind that David Beckham simply couldn’t be caricatured, as he was, in his words, “too handsome”. I called bullsh*t then and I’m calling bullsh*t now.

As promised, here is the final graphite & marker version of the Noel Gallagher sketch I started yesterday. I’ve adjusted the eyes since the earlier version, it’s a lot closer to what I had in mind now. Watch out for a timelapse process video shortly! 🎬

I’m a bit pushed for time today (drawing at a wedding in Whitby tonight), so only had time to lay down the coloured pencils on this sketch of Noel Gallagher. It’s not perfect - the eyes need work - but I’ll tighten it up in graphite tomorrow. Drawing time: 20 mins or so thus far.

Latest Lloyd sketch - completed!

Whilst I’m happy overall, there are some things I can already see I would change if and when I get around to scanning the drawing into Photoshop. I think Lloyd’s head is too large for one, and I wouldn’t mind giving it a little tilt so it appears he’s looking up at Mental as he is in the screencap.

But these and others are all things that one learns to spot once the eye for caricatured likeness is already in place. What would be cause for concern is if I knew the sketch was “off” in some way, but I had no idea how to fix it.

Jim Carrey fan? Want to own this original sketch? It’s available at £95.00 GBP plus shipping. (I ship worldwide.) DM me if interested! 🤙

I haven’t drawn Lloyd in a while, but stumbled upon a pic this morning that I knew I had to have a crack at. It’s actually from Dumb and Dumber To, a movie I remember bring largely disappointed by when I first saw it ten years ago. I should probably revisit it sometime, now the weight of expectation has gone.

This is a prime example of not drawing what you THINK someone looks like, but instead just use what’s there in the reference. I’ve never associated Jim Carrey with having either a long neck or large ears; but in the image both of those features leapt out at me. Despite that, the instant recognisability is still there, which is the reason I chose it. Scroll to view, and a peek at my process.

Further to my post this morning, I thought I’d share a closer look at the Robson Green sketch I presented to the man himself, and the process involved in arriving at the finished drawing.

You can clearly see that my initial observations led to throwing down maybe half a dozen rudimentary shapes, which I then gradually built up into a recognisable likeness. This is how I approach all faces, regardless of whether I’m working on studio art or drawing live caricatures at events. (Though naturally, it’s a vastly accelerated process when I’m performing live.)

Had a great time filming on the beautiful Northumberland coast with and his family yesterday. I ran a mini workshop demonstrating some of the principles of caricature, then had everyone draw each other using the techniques they had learned. They were great students, and the morning was an absolute hoot. I couldn’t have been made to feel more welcome. 😊

The segment will be shown as part of Robson’s Weekend Escapes show, which will air on the BBC at the beginning of next year.

You asked to see it, so here’s a closer look at the Christopher Lloyd sketch I posted earlier. Swipe to see the reference used. (I’m pretty sure it’s the scene where Lorraine is crushing on Marty in Doc’s garage.)

Many - but by no means all - of Doc’s expressions rely on nailing that crazy, wild-eyed look. Get that in place and you’re off to a good start. I’d say I’m about 95% of the way there, but there’s still scope to push it a little further.
