Hope to see you at Marching on Together- A Celebration on Friday nite 🙂
I have asked the DJ`s from the lineup to send me a writeup on how we first met from their perspective in their words.
Greg Churchill
40 years Djing is a seriously extraordinary achievement.
When Andy started House and techno didn’t exist, hiphop was only a blimp on the musical radar.
I first met Andy it was around 1990/91 at the Worcester Bar in Chch.
I’d only been Djing clubs for about 3 years at this point, he was already approaching ten.
He was touring the (soon to be) very successful local R&B act The Semi MCs.
We sat at the back of the bar and chatted at great length about dance music, football, and Andy’s beloved Leeds who at this time were playing their best football of the last 30 years and about to be crowned champions of England.
In 1996 I packed my bags and moved to Auckland.
I started working at a dance record store .
I played house music.
So did Andy.
For a scene that was growing bigger and stronger by the year, Andy and my paths seldom ever met.
Auckland was awash with so many clubs.
From the High Street and the CBD, to K Rd, to Howick and the North Shore, house music really did spread itself across Auckland staying very close to its underground roots.
Such vibrancy led to a in influx of huge parties (2000-7000 ) and a constant stream of internationals from which Andy was at the fore front of promoting.
When I look back now I can only remember one gig where Andy and I played together.
Safari Lounge, these days Long Room, where I heard Andy performing his famous bird scratch.
Ned Roy played between us that night.
I certainly cant recall either of us played immediately after each other.
It would take nearly 20 years before our paths would actually finally meet.
Oddly enough it was an after party for Andys 50th birthday after he’d persuaded my (soon to be) wife Leah, to invite about 40 people back to our house after one of his infamous Meat Lovers Balls at Ink where the joke that night was to gift Andy nothing but shampoo and hair products.
From this point forward Andy and I became rather good friends.
From spilling a glass of red wine all over my new white Jordans (after placing on a spinning turntable platter….), to Andy getting chilly sauce in his eye and somewhere else (yes there)…..,to spending Xmas together, DJing 3 tracks at our wedding, to me needing to drink all his beer (very quickly) after eating the hottest chilly chicken ever at one of our regular curry club catchups, to convincing Andy nothing was falling off the ceiling at Ink and bumping the tunes, to telling me there was DEFINITELY only one track on the record, and not two... (this became a running gag between us at swap over) …… a plan was hatched where we rekindled our love of playing vinyl.
Black Wax was the lifeline I think Andy & I both needed.
It’s also proved to be an eye opener to what an exceptional DJ talent I’d missed out on hearing for the last 20 years.
Man
Can
Vann roll a mix!
From Dj, promoter, scene leader, innovator and gate keeper of the “house music underground” Andy’s importance and significance to the NZ electronic scene is often not spoken about enough.
That celebration begins right now!

Midnite Snack-Beats for Bodge
Yes yes, it's time for a party with a purpose, recently our mate Bodge (or Duane Read as he's known to his Mum) was diagnosed with Stage 4 Stomach Cancer and is currently fundraising hard to get to $126k to access medication that is not covered by the government - we thought we'd all get together and rustle up a big ol party with 100% of the proceeds of the night going towards the Givealittle page on the link here -
https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/support-duanes-fight-against-cancer house heavyweights at Auckland's home of hedonism, Ink Bar.
With DJs Greg Churchill, Ange, Andy Vann, Azza & Sweetpants - as well as a very rare appearance of Ed the Deep House Mantis - coming out of DJ retirement for his first gig in 6 years!
Midnight Snack was the name of Bodge & Azza's Friday night GeorgeFM show from back in the day. Seems like a legit name for a party like this - get your presales via UTR or just roll up and pay cashola on the door. Don't miss this opportunity to help a brother out, and have an epic time in the process...
Bodge and Azza started the midnight snack radio show back in 2007 on George FM Friday nights.. it was an exciting time for them both being passionate music heads getting to play the house music they loved on the radio. Over the 3 or so years the show ran, there were a lot of great tunes, numerous guests, and drunken late-night shenanigans. Good times. let's resurrect that vibe at Ink on Oct 13
