I was thinking about Bishop last week, wanted to reach out to him for a number of reasons, but dealing with my own stuff, I said, “I’ll message him after the weekend.” I didn’t realize that I wouldn’t get that chance. I guess I didn’t realize how far gone it was. This is a lesson learned in not taking your homies for granted.
I’ve known Bishop, like, almost 30 years now. The picture here is from summer of ’99 or 2000, on the set of “Drop the Beat”
From listening to his freestyle days on Power Move (Saturdays, 1-4pm) to the ciphers, to our club days, this guy was a fu***ng beast on the mic. He would send me dubplates to play at the club and to this day I’m still trying to find those old CDs.
Unfortunately, the last time I saw him in person was at Kornerstones just before the pandemic. He came out and asked me to play some “real bashment, house party, beat down the furnace Dancehall” LOL, and when I went in, I know didn’t disappoint because at the end of the night he was going on about how it was like old times.
I really wish I would’ve got to see this guy again.
Again, don’t take your people for granted.
My heart goes out to his family right now. He was also a part of “our family” (those who know, know)
Scarborough lost a real one today. Hip-Hop lost a real one today.
Going to have a drink and listen to some Bishop Brigante tonight. Rest easy, my brother.
