Ally’s choice for a woman who continues to inspire her is Gloria Steinem. It would be hard to name a more influential woman in the feminist movement than Gloria Steinem. She is a pioneer in the women’s movement and is a writer, political activist, and feminist organizer. Like Ally, who is the biggest champion for women, she fiercely believes there is nothing a woman cannot do. Steinem first became a household name after she worked undercover to expose the Pl***oy Club in NYC. She went on to write many more influential articles and essays as well as starting her own magazine in 1971. She continued to write extensively on women’s issues which then turned into public speaking on women’s rights. At 90 years old she still continues to work for social justice, and has no plans of stopping.

We are kicking off the last week of women’s history month with Ava’s choice, the one and only Oprah Winfrey. Oprah is not only known for being a media mogul, she’s also known for her huge contributions in supporting women in many different ways. Through her talk show, various philanthropic endeavors, she has always championed women’s rights and encouraged women to pursue their dreams. Oprah’s ability to create a community because of her own vulnerability is inspiring in itself. She always brings people along in her journey, especially women. 🙌

Cheryl’s choice for her women in history, is not surprisingly another badass woman in sports! For those who don’t know, Cheryl coaches women’s Ultimate Frisbee, you know, in her spare time. Cheryl is passionate about women’s sports so when she chose Althea Gibson, a woman who broke barriers in not one but two professional sports it was no surprise!

Althea was the first person of color to compete at Wimbledon in 1952, then went on to win the French Open and Wimbledon and the U.S. Open titles in 1957 and 1958. In the 1960’s she tried her hand at professional golf and was the first black woman to ever compete on the pro tour. She was a powerhouse in the world of sports but downplayed her pioneering role not wanting to be a crusader for any cause. 🎾

Today’s women in history is Erica’s inspiration for always fighting fiercely for women and girls, Madeleine Albright. Albright was the first woman Secretary of State in the history of America, and she paved the way for the women after her. She was a role model for so many women domestically but also internationally. She knew being a woman in politics was an advantage, she said in 2010, “I think we are better, a lot, at personal relationships and have the capability, obviously, of telling it like it is when it is necessary.” Like Erica, she was always championing women and bringing the next generation up with her.

Colleen’s nomination for her women of inspiration is 6 time gold medalist at the IIHF World Women’s Championship and two time Olympic gold medalist, Kendall Coyne Schofield. Kendall is a leader on and off the ice, while she continued her career in the PWHL she also worked as a player development coach with the Chicago Blackhawks. She is part of the change that we are seeing in women’s hockey and women’s sports everywhere. Colleen and Kendall have a lot in common in the determination department. After Coyne Schofield had her first baby she said she wanted him to know he was never the reason she stopped playing hockey... he was the reason she continued to play hockey.

On International Women’s day we are Inspired by Sara Blakely, Melissa’s choice in our Women’s History month series! Melissa is the biggest champion and cheerleader for women, so it makes sense she chose Sara Blakely who built a billion dollar company focused on women. After starting the company by herself with $5,000 in savings, she went from being a door-to-door fax machine saleswoman to the youngest self-made female billionaire in the world in just fourteen years. She had no experience in the fashion or product development industry - just an idea and trust in herself. If we could all be this fearless!

We’re excited to showcase powerhouse women throughout March who inspire our team this Women’s History Month!

First up is Caily’s choice. If you know anything about Caily, she loves basketball and is a big supporter of women’s sports. So, it’s no surprise that her choice is the legend, Pat Summit! Not only was Pat one of the most successful coaches of all time, she also changed the game of women’s basketball. Through her coaching, she ultimately helped gain a new level of respect for women’s college basketball and encouraged young girls to want to play the game. 🏀⛹🏻‍♀️
