LEAF Open Farm Sunday, managed by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), is one of the farming industry’s biggest success stories. Lets hope the weather is good this weekend so we can enjoy a delicious barbecue to end National Barbecue week in style. As it's Friday lets have some char-grilled Tasty Trivia...

The name Barbecue is said to stem from "barbacoa," which is a West Indian term for "slow cooking over hot coals."

Others think the French were responsible, offering the explanation that when the Caribbean pirates arrived on our Southern shores, they cooked animals on a spit-like device that ran from “whiskers to tail” or “de barbe a` queue.

The most popular foods for cooking on the grill are, in order: burgers (85 percent), steak (80 percent), hot dogs (79 percent) and chicken (73 percent).

As it is British Sandwich Week Tasty Trivia this week celebrates the humble sandwich in all its glory:

The sandwich was named after Lord Sandwich – a gambler who didn’t have time to eat during a play so he would ask his servants to bring him slices of meat in between slices of bread

The earliest reference to a ‘bacon sandwich’ listed in the Oxford English Dictionary was by George
Orwell in 1931

The first ‘packaged’ sandwich is believed to have been launched by Marks & Spencer in 1985 - which was not just a sandwich, but and M&S packaged sandwich

Some of Subway's "foot long" sandwiches were only 11 inches and it resulted in a lawsuit

Northern Taste - Good Food for All Occasions

Northern Taste was started by school cooks in Sunderland who saw an opportunity to use their skills and expertise to develop a new catering business.

We began by providing buffets for school-based meetings and events, and then very quickly expanded to take on the catering for all of Sunderland City Council’s meetings and civic events and functions.

We now also provide catering for local businesses, as well as celebration events such as children’s birthday parties, weddings, christenings, retirements and significant birthdays. We can also cater for funerals.

Located in Sunderland, but able to deliver across the North East, we offer a wide range of menus and are more than happy to work with our customers to develop a bespoke food offer that meets their specific requirements.
