501st LEGION, HOW IT ALL STARTED - AS TOLD BY THE FOUNDER (summarized)
Albin Johnson wanted something military-sounding, a big number that ended in "one" for authenticity. Inspired by WWII's "Fighting Seabee's" motto he says, I considered 400 or 500, but 500 felt like a nice round number, so adding the "1" made it 501.
As for "Legion," that evolved from an our early website, "Detention Block 2551," where stormtrooper enthusiasts shared photos. Initially, I liked the idea of calling us a "Squad" (inspired by my dad’s WWII airmen background), but as we grew, "Squad" no longer fit. I didn't want a title that would limit us, and I didn’t want to disrespect real military terms. So, drawing inspiration from Roman history and Star Wars, I chose "Legion"—a word that was both timeless and flexible. Plus, when I saw Palpatine mention two of his "finest Legions" in Return of the Jedi, it felt like a perfect fit for our group.
As we expanded, I also needed a name for our regional chapters. I didn’t want everyone just paying tribute to the bigger club. So, like the Roman Empire, I introduced "Garrisons" to represent different areas. The first three were simple: East, West, and Central. Soon, we added Garrisons for the Southern, Midwest, Southwest, and Northwest U.S., as well as a European one. Over time, these became more localized, and some, like Southern, became "Outposts" as they grew larger.
We also created "Detachments" for theme-based groups, taking inspiration from Vader’s speech in A New Hope where he mentions the Tatooine detachment. Specialized units like this made sense for remote areas and added another layer of structure to our growing Legion. The journey from a small group of stormtrooper fans to a global organization was fun and full of unexpected twists—but it all started with a simple idea and a bit of creative thinking back in 1997!
