This is what I made for .helsdottir between picking mushrooms and painting the terrace of our house (swipe to see the photographic evidence). I really enjoyed weaving all three!

Once again, I break the taboo of pink colour. I remember avoiding it my whole teens and young adulthood almost like it was poisonous.

In contrast to the late 20th century bias, pink was considered unisex or even "manly" colour throughout history. After all, pink is a pale shade of red. And red was always considered a desirable and highly valued colour.

Pinks were usually achieved by dipping yarn or fabric into the dyeing pot after the first batches of red were removed and the dye bath was less concentrated. If you spent all the time and resources for collection and preparation of the dye, you would use everything up, won't you?

That said, pinks achieved by snail purpura and chenille bugs were still very exclusive and expensive. Pinks from madder, buckthorn bark, mushrooms and lichens were more accessible, yet we see very little of them amongst reenactors, even those depicting middle to lower status personas.

Thanks for joining me on my little TED-talk about natural dyes!

If you are in Bergen on the first weekend of October you can try to dye some yarns with me (again, link in bio).

Plant dyeing is 🤩 🌿🌸 And it's historically correct!
I have a big box full of colourful skeins I dyed with plants collected in my nearest surroundings. Yellows, greens, browns, purples... And there is another bunch of skeins we dyed at a workshop held in the barn of .gard in June I still didn't collect (I promise I will stop by this week, Helene).
Are you in Hordaland? Good, because we are doing one more workshop the first weekend of October during

I always love to do this one! The brown yarn is dyed with lichen from the forest behind my house 🌲 Based on popular narrow band from 9th century Viking ship burial from Oseberg, Norway. You choose the length, I weave 🧶

It was nice to weave something just for joy. Now working on custom orders.
This one is loosely based on Birka B12 band from Viking age Sweden. Now in my shop.

Just finished a very quick project made of yarn scraps. Yes, it is somewhat hairy and it's not cat hair this time - it is beige alpaca yarn that tends to get fuzzy. Now I have to wash it a bit and see if I can remove some of the hair to improve the surface. It is 230 cm long, 1,5 cm wide and handwoven of purple and green wool and beige alpaca.

Some people don't like tapestry wool because it's hairy. I love it 🥹 It's like a small animal. That's my random Tuesday thought.
And yes, I found a forgotten project in a basket and now I'm trying to figure out the weaving sequence because I used some weird threading or starting position (different from what I normally do for this pattern).

Greetings from a trip to Sogn! I had to leave this unfinished band behind home in Isdal but I do not regret it. So much to do in Sogndal! I visited the local museum called "De Heibergske samlinger" with an amazing collection of ancient buildings, curiosities and utensils. Including some tablet weaving cards 😁

We are spending a part of our vacation in Sogndal. Of course we had to visit the local museum! There are several buildings from 1600's in its collection as well as beautifully decorated furniture, utensils and personal belongings. And of course a piece of tablet woven band!

The first group of knitters from the US learned a thing or two about dying yarns with plants :)
They left the workshop with 6 colours in their bags:
deep yellow, bright yellow, olive green, tan brown, orange and purple. The second group will hopefully get the same wonderful result coming Wednesday

Nothing special to share, just a belt I like. It was not hard to weave it at all, it is not made of anything else than pure wool and its colours are not exactly striking. Still, I find it charming. Maybe because it is so simple?
I will list it in my web shop later this evening. I hope it gets to the right person 😊
