Live in Las Vegas Vol. 2 Review by Joe Viglione from AllMusic
https://www.cherfanclub.com/album/live-in-las-vegas-vol-2
There are 17 photos of Sonny & Cher adorning the front, back, and gatefold of Live in Las Vegas Vol. 2. The first volume on Kapp was recorded at the West Side Room; like that album, this set of recordings is again produced by Denis Pregnolato, but taped at the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas during July and August of 1973. The show begins with their 1971 Top Ten hit "All I Ever Need Is You," and contains their obligatory self-deprecating humor woven throughout the medley of "I Can See Clearly Now," "You've Got a Friend," and "Where You Lead," all 1971-1972 standards. Even Jeff Porcaro on drums and Dean Parks on guitar can't keep the Jack Eglash Orchestra from adding too much schmaltz to the proceedings. The band is extraordinary — conductor/keyboard player David Paich played with Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker, and Elton John, while Dean Parks had an equally long resumé, including Cocker and Neil Diamond. Sonny & Cher do their TV show onstage, the aforementioned Diamond represented here by "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show," while the original risqué lyrics to "Superstar" by Bonnie Bramlett flow from Cher's lips. Perhaps the real nugget here is the version of Stevie Wonder's "You and I" (not one of his more popular numbers, but one that shows his prowess), proving that a Vegas act can perform a non-hit and make it a standout. There is a twist of fate here: On Stevie Wonder Live, Wonder goes through the Vegas-type routine, while on this very showbiz double-set by Sonny & Cher, his tune is the diamond in the rough. But that cliché is not totally fair — these professionals are doing what the audience expects, and they are pop art icons. Sonny Bono's version of his composition "You Better Sit Down Kids" works much better than the studio recording from the All I Ever Need Is You album. Though Cher's 1967 Top Ten gender-flip version is still the classic, it is very nice to hear the author do his song in the presence of the star who made it famous. Decades after being recorded, Live in Las Vegas Vol. 2 stands as an important document by two important personalities, backed up by stellar musicians. It is classy and classic stuff. Where Stevie Wonder Live crammed an hour's worth of music on two sides, MCA wisely spread this music and comedy over four.

Prayer for Comfort And Consolation

Dear Angel,
My heart feels lonely, and my soul has lost courage. Please whisper in my ear that I am always loved and worthy of the best. Surround me with comfort and ease. Shower me with blessings and flood my path with your glowing light. My dear Angel, please, cheer me up, give me confidence in the face of uncertainty and joy in the face of suffering. Help me find myself when I feel lost. Please, let me rest underneath your mighty wings of love and dwell within your blissful heart.
Amen.

Mistaken Identity Review by Joe Viglione

Mistaken Identity should have established Kim Carnes as a huge international star. Her Rod Stewart rasp, affiliation with Kenny Rogers, management by Ken Kragen when he was arguably at his peak, makes one wonder why the across-the-board success of "Bette Davis Eyes" couldn't be duplicated. Three years after the success of this album, Tina Turner actually did conquer the world, the various producers on Private Dancer weaving enough different textures to make for a multi-dimensional masterpiece. Too many cooks made for wonderful stew. Val Garay certainly did a good job on Mistaken Identity, more defined than his work with Marty Balin on the Lucky album a year after this, an album which, for that great artist, wasn't very...lucky. It's not that the other Donna Weiss/Jackie DeShannon tune, "Hit and Run," which follows "Bette Davis Eyes," doesn't have a good performance; it does. The problem with the Mistaken Identity album is that everything on it stands in the shadows of a masterpiece. The country risqué of the Jackie DeShannon original from New Arrangement has as extraordinary a re-working as Lou Reed's "Rock & Roll" got from Bob Ezrin when Mitch Ryder got to make it his underground anthem. Carnes is just brilliant on her solo composition, "Mistaken Identity, and it is subtle and smart enough to have crossed over to adult contemporary and jazz formats. Frankie Miller's "When I'm Away From You" sounds like Rod Stewart doing "True Blue" -- those upfront snare drums and a hook as strong as an undertow. Perhaps this should have been the follow-up to "Bette Davis Eyes" rather than "Draw of the Cards," which followed and lingered around the Top 30. Not a place to be for the follow-up to a monster smash. This is an evolution from her work on A&M, and certainly far removed from the New Christy Minstrels. The album comes with photographs galore on the innersleeve, all the lyrics, and tons of credits. Her first hit on EMI about ten months earlier was the fantastic reworking of "More Love," and that elegant pop gem was the type of thing needed to propel this to the status Private Dancer attained for Turner, that Physical garnered for Olivia Newton-John. "Draw of the Cards" plays like a mellow dance number, aimed at a new wave audience when -- well, face it, her biggest smash before "Bette Davis Eyes" was the mellow "Don't Fall in Love With a Dreamer." There is absolutely no pun intended to say this album is more of an identity crisis than a mistaken identity. Wendy Waldman, Carnes, and her husband, Dave Ellingson, craft "Break the Rules Tonite (Out of School)," but it is just too much of a diversion on an album that tests the waters of different rock genres. Flirting with Leslie West-style hard rock is not as appealing to her audience as the beautifully crafted Tom Snow/Dean Pitchford tune "Don't Call It Love." Her other solo composition, "Miss You Tonite," is more the style we expect, and Carnes' beautiful piano work on Richard Stekol's "My Old Pals" brings the album to a proper conclusion. If only this big and talented team could have come up with another couple of brilliant new arrangements as they did with "Bette Davis Eyes." The name Kim should be up there with Olivia, Tina, and Grace, and it wasn't for lack of talent that superstardom didn't occur.

https://www.alibris.com/search/music/upc/827912006148 Time, dreams, and angels seem like Stevie Nicks territory and that's just some of the subject matter on Chasin' Wild Trains, which probably means Kim Carnes is getting introspective these days -- leaning more towards a folksy Patti Smith than the pal of Kenny Rogers we've known and loved. The woman who has somehow straddled the country and rock worlds better than most sounds like a female version of the Eagles going acoustic -- and that's a compliment. "Oh I'd go drivin' down a two lane highway/chasin' wild trains" she sings in "Runaway" while playing keyboards on this blend of piano/guitar/violin/viola and cello. It's one of the more intriguing tracks,l holding the title of the CD in its bosom. Where Jackie DeShannon's album from 2000, You Know Me, fired on all cylinders, Carnes takes a more subtle approach, though she opens "You Made My Skin Burn" with "You don't know me/I don't know you," almost in a reverse answer to her old friend DeShannon's album title. It's the creative Carnes weaving magic, even some fade-in and fade-out on the ending à la Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds." This particular track is included in the soundtrack of Jeff Bridges' film The Moguls (Carnes previously recorded with Bridges in a duet for The Contenders, his 2001 film) and it is one of the more rockin' -- and eerie -- numbers on this disc. What would have been a treat would be for Carnes to have modeled the new cover of her now classic hit after the original from Jackie DeShannon 1975 New Arrangement LP. "Still Warmed by the Thrill" brings more moodiness and depth to a project which features a truly eclectic cast from Craig Krampf , the drummer from Carnes' original band, showing up on the two of the more commercial tracks -- "Just to See You Smile" and "You Made My Skin Burn" -- to the great Al Anderson co-writing and lending guitars to the skiffle-ish "Stepped Right in It" along with hubby Dave Ellingson adding some percussion. Jeff Hanna from Nitty Gritty Dirt Band adds slide guitar to "If I Was an Angel," featuring the excellent line "There's no choosin' where you land/once you fall from grace" while "Too Far Gone" recalls this artist's "Gypsy Honeymoon" phase. Kim Carnes' album Chasin' Wild Trains could easily elude an audience because one needs to pay a lot of attention to it, the Scotty Bagget recording of Carnes' production is not as immediately pronounced but ready, willing, and able to grow on you when given the chance. ~ Joe Viglione, Rovi

01/08/2024

Top 10 Reasons Why Joe Biden / Kamala Harris have already won the 2024 election:

1)It's the Economy - jobs reports are fabulous, inflation is down, especially compared to the rest of the world, and Biden gave us massive infrastructure, something Trump wanted very much but couldn't pull off. Biden knows our needs and how to navigate Congress and the Senate.
2)THE POLLS the polls are asking all the wrong questions right now because they want readership. This strange change in polling happened maybe 15 years ago when the pollsters realized the money to be had in saying the wrong thing. It is all about the money and they want you to believe the race is close. It isn't.
3)TRUMP AND ADOLPH HI**ER Hi**er gained popularity nationwide by exploiting unrest during the Great Depression, and in 1932 he placed second in the presidential race. Hi**er's various maneuvers resulted in the winner, Paul von Hindenburg, appointing him chancellor in January 1933. The problem for Trump is that we are doing well, Germany was devastated by the WW1 and had to come back from devastation. Trump has not that card to play.

4)Trump and Hi**er Part 2: understood the power of symbols, oratory, and image, and formulated party slogans to reach the masses that were simple, concrete, and emotionally appealing. Meanwhile, Trump plays to his "Apprentice" crowd. The rest of reality knows what a crook he was in the White House, stealing secret documents, falsely claiming immunity for all things, never taking responsibility. Keep repeating a lie and some people will believe it. Thankfully, Trump makes the little boy who cried wolf look like Honest George or Honest Abe. Only his cult believe the nonsense. It is amazing how large that cult is, but it doesn't reach over 33 percent, and voter's are not THAT stupid.

5)Trump and Adolf Hi**er Part 3: Hi**er was bogged down by his drug abuse and going after Stalin, having too many wars on too many fronts, was not very Napoleanic of Adolph. Hi**er had too many battles. So while Trump is throwing rocks at all Democrats and victims like Paul Pelosi, he is also attacking the people he needs: Ted Cruz, Chris Christie, Mike Pence - like Michael Cohen says, Trump is loyal to no one but himself. His sons and daughters know to be Marjorie Taylor Green - sycophants, for they know how traitorous daddy dearest is.

6)THE ABORTION ISSUE: Look, I don't believe in abortion, but I believe in a woman's right to choose. Also, the Republicans are such hypocrites, once the baby is born they want to take its social security safety net away. You can't have it both ways. They then send those babies of both sexes off to their lucrative wars. They disgust me. The abortion issue will carry the Democrats in many areas for voting in 2024

7)Adolph Hi**er and John Petrella: Mr. Petrella in Medford came in 3rd to last out of 9 candidates. John Petrella — 3,809 votes to Zac Bears 7,495 votes Petrella was screaming hateful anti-trans rhetoric. We see where it got him. Use the microcosm to see the macrocosm. MAGA politics was a fluke in 2016 with Hillary Clinton winning 3 million more votes than Trump. Trump can never win a popular vote. Yes, the Russians influenced the electoral college, and the USA does this all the time to foreign countries, they just don't talk about it.

8)BIDEN ACTUALLY CARES ABOUT YOU Unlike the screaming maniac, Trump, who failed to tell you about Covid, the Biden administration is not for millionaires, it is for the middle class. You never heard about Neil Bush, the disgrace of the Bush family, because they hushed it up and Democrats would rather benefit the USA, most of them, then impeaching George W. Bush on the sins of his brother. Cheney was president anyway and we all know it. As one Republican said to me "You wanted George Bush to run the country?" Acknowledging what a dim wit he was. I will say in Bush's defense, despite his stupidity as a second in command president who murdered many by his allowing those around him to be in control, he has become an excellent elder statesman. Go figure.

9)Joe Biden and public safety: While Trump held an insurrection the Biden administration: To strengthen public safety and public trust, he signed a landmark executive order on safe, effective, and accountable policing that mandated federal reforms such as banning chokeholds, restricting no-knock entries, creating a national police accountability database, and restricting the transfer of military equipment ...

10)read this: Biden’s record and accomplishments are extremely positive https://www.recorder.com/my-turn-Grosky-Biden-s-Record-and-Accomplishments-52422040
President Biden fought for and signed the American Rescue Plan which protected workers’ pensions, provided funding to communities and businesses devastated by COVID-19, lowered or eliminated insurance premiums for millions of lower- and middle-income families, provided funds for affordable housing, provided money for public safety and crime reduction, provided support to small business, expanded food assistance programs in homes and schools, expanded child care programs, invested in mental health and health care centers, added $40 billion for investing in American workers, provided funding to the economies of tribal nations, and supported families with children. Child poverty has already been cut in half as a result of his efforts.
