You are to be holy to me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own.
Leviticus 20:26 NIV

When we Christians read this, we must understand that we are the people of God today. What God said to Israel he also says to us, for in the new relationship we have in Jesus Christ there is neither Jew nor Gentile -- there is but one man, one body in Christ. And as such we are set apart to be an example for others. Let your daily actions reflect your faith.

He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
Matthew 28:6 NIV

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
John 13:14 NIV

What Jesus did by washing the disciples' feet was not meant to suggest they were equal. On the contrary, Jesus clearly states that He is the Lord (John 13:13). His action completely overturned the idea of what godly leadership looks like. It reset the concept of servanthood, changing it from something degrading and shameful into a mutual expression of love and respect. The point Jesus makes here is clear: He is the Master. What a master does, no servant can claim to be exempt from. If someone claims to be a servant of Christ, they are mandated to follow His example and act in sacrificial service to others.

The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
Matthew 26:24 NIV

Jesus has announced to the Twelve that one of them will betray Him (Matthew 26:20–23). Referring to Himself as the Son of Man, Jesus again notes that what happens to Him is part of prophecy. It is a much different outcome, though, for the one who is betraying Christ. Jesus declares "woe" or judgment for that man. He adds that it would have been better for that man if he had never been born. Only Jesus knows that He is speaking of Judas (Matthew 26:14–17), one of the twelve men who has travelled with Him for much of the previous three years. Judas will suffer greatly for his betrayal.

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
Mark 11:24 NIV

Now let’s but this into the proper context. Jesus is not endorsing the modern Word of Faith movement. Nor is He suggesting that God operates as a cosmic vending machine, doling out wishes. Believing that God will answer our prayer is not a spell that we place on God so He must give us what we want. The context of the promise of prayer is God's ordained ministry, if we ask with the right intentions (James 4:1–3) and within God's will (1 John 5:14–15). The Bible promises "if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him" (James 1:5). If we pray for wisdom first, and ask in God's will, we will receive what we ask for. If we ask without wisdom, we won't ask according to His will, and have no reason to expect such a request to be granted.

You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
John 12:8 NIV

This is the second part of Jesus' defense of Mary. She was criticized by Judas for "wasting" precious oil anointing Jesus, rather than selling it and giving the money to the poor (John 12:1–4). The truth is that Judas was bitter to see a chance at theft slip through his fingers (John 12:5–6). Here, Jesus makes a remark about the poor which can be grossly misunderstood if taken out of context. Judas' complaint was a clever deception because it contained an element of truth. Logically, Mary could have sacrificed her oil for the poor, instead of an anointing. However, the opportunity to honor Jesus was unique—it was the last chance she would have for that act of worship. The symbolism and lesson contained in that act is one that has been preserved in God's own Word (Mark 14:6–11). Jesus' comment is not, at all, meant to brush aside the idea of caring for those who are poor. Rather, the point is about the uniqueness of this moment.

They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!”
John 12:13 NIV

Palm branches were ancient symbols of victory. The term hosanna was most famously used in Psalm 118:25–26, and means "save now!" It came to be a figure of speech praising God for deliverance, and it was said in support of a king or victor. Unfortunately, many of the people still misunderstand the nature of Jesus' role. Those who turned away after He fed thousands (John 6:26) were disappointed that He spoke of spiritual issues, instead of political ones. It's likely that most of those cheering for Jesus in this crowd are also expecting Him to come as a conquering king, to oppose the Roman oppressors.

23/03/2024

For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
Esther 4:14 NIV

As a believer we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, those whom He has called to His purpose (Romans 8:28). Mordecai was letting Esther know that if she didn’t talk to the king on behalf of the Jews (which would include herself) and the impending killing that they would be delivered by God some other way. And that she may have been put in her position to accomplish this very purpose.

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
Romans 10:17 NIV

This famous verse builds on Paul's quote of Isaiah in the previous verse. There Isaiah asks the Lord "who has believed what he has heard from us?" (Isaiah 53:1). Paul was showing that a refusal to believe what God says amounts to disobedience. That, according to Scripture, is the root problem when people hear the gospel and do not accept it (John 5:39–40; 7:17). Those who disbelieve do so because, on some level, they do not want to believe.

21/03/2024

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
1 Peter 3:15 NIV

When we set apart Christ as Lord, it will change us. Peter says those who observe us will notice the difference. That difference is hope. Even in the midst of our suffering, our hopefulness should be apparent. So, Peter instructs us to be ready to answer the question our life should inspire: "How can you be so hopeful in such difficult circumstances?"

for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is His name.
Luke 1:49 NIV

In the early part of her speech, Mary humbly worshipped God for His role as her Savior (Luke 1:46–47). Her words echoed some of Hannah's prayer to God, as she asked for a child in 1 Samuel 1:11 and celebrated an answer to prayer in 1 Samuel 2:1. Here, she again gives all credit for this miracle to God. She acknowledges God's power (Psalm 50:1; 62:7; 106:2) and holiness (Exodus 15:11; Leviticus 20:26; Psalm 99:5).

19/03/2024

LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago.
Isaiah 25:1 NIV

What he means by this phrase, is that he will exalt the LORD with his words and actions. He will give the LORD the most exalted place in his heart. The second thing Isaiah promises the LORD is to give thanks to Your name. In Israel's culture a person's name is more than just what they happen to be called.

18/03/2024

All the prophets testify about Him that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name.”
Acts 10:43 NIV

The "prophets" are those mentioned in the Old Testament, including Moses (Deuteronomy 18:15), David (Psalm 22), Isaiah (53; 61:1–3), Hosea (Hosea 6:1–2), and Jonah. They, like the apostles (Acts 1:8), bear witness to Jesus' identity as the Son of God and the Jewish Messiah. Jesus "name" doesn't mean the syllables Peter uses to identify Him. It means His power, authority, sovereignty, and deity: His identity. Jesus saves because of who He is.

17/03/2024

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.
Hebrews 5:7 NIV

Earlier verses explained that a priest offers prayers to God on behalf of the people. Here, Jesus is said to have done the same. In this way, He again fulfills the requirements of a human priest. Jesus' death on the cross was the sacrifice offered, once and for all, for human sin (Hebrews 9:26). The "rescue" He obtained was not from death, but out of death. The resurrection of Jesus was the ultimate sign of His acceptance and approval by God.

Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.
Micah 7:18 NIV

Micah is saying that the Lord acts this way – He carries away our sins, forgives our rebellion, shows His mercy – because that's just who He is.
