I’ve been with Etsy since 2013 and have endured many changes. I say endured because the platform has evolved at the detriment to sellers. Their tagline is Keep Commerce Human and yet we are forced into a mass-production style market.
Over the last few years, Etsy has made several decisions that have hindered the ability for sellers to thrive, including:
- Not providing sellers with adequate support when questions arise.
- Requiring sellers to respond to messages within 24 hours in order to achieve star seller status, even during holidays and weekends, and even when those messages are from a fellow seller.
- Allowing customers to "make offers" on artisan products, further conditioning buyers to seek bottom-of-the-barrel pricing.
- Issuing refunds to customers on items claimed to be "not received", even when tracking states that the items have been delivered.
- Administering a payment reserve system of up to 75% of the sellers own earnings for an unknown period of time, and for unknown reasons/triggers that Etsy will not disclose when sellers request answers.
- Etsy gives us no control over reviews. When a customer publicly admits they didn’t read the description but demand a refund and gives a seller a 1 star review, we can’t remove the review and yet it drops our ranking in Etsy’s system and often results in a loss of ‘Etsy star seller’.
- Etsy will remind sellers to have frequent sales and to lower their prices.
- Etsy allows mass-produced, IP products to fill their market with brands such as Disney, movie titles, branded toy labels and other branded items which makes it difficult for artisans to stand out.
FEES: we pay fees on:
- using Etsy’s shipping labels
- 6.5% fee on each transaction
- 4.0% fee for processing that transaction
- 0.20c listing fee for every listing, over and over each time it sells
- mandatory advertising that you cant opt out of if you make more than $10k in a year.
Does this sound like sellers are in control of their own business?! Etsy has driven hand-made goods into the “mass-produced, cheap plastic” market, and we can’t compete!
