Our Story

Island Weddings and Blessings has been serving people from around the world with customized weddings, vow renewals and blessings on Kauai since 1989. Owned and operated by the Merle-Jones family. Michael & Fern along with their two sons Quinn and Jesse, have a deep-rooted connection with Kauai.

Fern & Michael first moved to Heana on the North Shore of Kauai in 1978, on a venture to start one the first fishing charter company on the island. And while the ocean offered great sport, the magnificence of Kauai was still one of untold beauty. Fields of sugar cane, dusty plantation towns and bumpy roads surrounded the dense and lush interior of the island. The North Shore of Kauai was a lengthy expedition from the rest of the island with bumpy slow roads, dangerous cliffs and free roaming livestock that lead to lush valleys and empty beaches. A true hidden paradise where people were still connected to the land and the pressures of the mainland seemed far away. Fern & Michael fell in love with Kauai and stayed even though the boat company had failed. For many years Michael worked in the Carpenters Union, building The Princeville Hotel that would help to usher a new era of industry on Kauai. As an ordained minister at the time, Michael performed many weddings for family and friends on weekends and in his spare time, helping other people where he could.

As time unfolded, the legend of Kauai's beauty spread to the rest of world, we witnessed the rise of hotels and industry fueled by visitor demand and the Japanese financial bubble in the mid 80's. As Kauai's popularity grew and the Merle-Jones's built their community connections; more and more people began to request wedding services. Many asked if we could help their visiting friends with the logistics and planning from afar for their special day as there were no available wedding services for the many exotic locations around the island. Jesse went on to become a professional surfer winning a US Domestic title and now owns The Wishing Well Shave Ice in Hanalei.

It was the summer of 1989 when Fern & Michael decided to take the plunge and start what is today; Kauai's most reputable, award winning and experienced wedding company, "Island Weddings & Blessings". Working with the Hawaii Board of Tourism, sending flyers and photos by snail mail and all in a time without cell phones or the internet the response was amazing. Island Weddings & Blessings became the first visitor bureau listed and recommended wedding company on Kauai, recipient of the Best of the Best Kauai award and Kauai's most established wedding company. In 2012 Quinn joined the family business, adding to its modern image, technology and bringing in new and fresh ideas. Over the years we have seen many wedding companies come to the island and today Kauai is considered a premier wedding destination location. As Kauai's oldest wedding company, we know the landscape as our home and on Kauai it's all about "who you know". We work with the best Kauai has to offer and have long term relationships with our professional vendors and those that are established here on Kauai. While we have seen many changes, the one thing has remained the same, "the power of love, which is truly our guide in this lifetime". We are so incredibly grateful to the many people who have put their trust in us and are humbled by their actions of kindness, award and love.
