Hey Y’all! I realized this was becoming a faceless page with me having some health challenges over the last month. Here’s a couple of proof that this page isn’t run by a bot photos. These are also great memories from November when my fiancé flew me out (as the young people say)) to New York and spoiled me with the most romantic trip a man has ever taken me on. From the 5 star hotel right across the street from New York’s central library (where Carrie and Big were supposed to get married the first time )…and we got to see The Book of HOV and Spike Lee Art exhibits in Brooklyn. Sis! Heal so when someone tries to love you, you let them.

My favorite youngest son looks just like me when I was in college; partied all night and had to be at work the next morning. At least he is at his second job which is at a skateboard shop…duh! He also works at the Greensboro Science Center which is a combination museum, zoo, and aquarium. He does not HAVE to work one job; much less two. His Dad and I support him beyond what I could have ever imagined when I was a little black girl growing up on the south side of Chicago. I emphasize Nicholas graduating in December debt free to hopefully encourage other black parents to believe they can do the same for activities, high school, and college. Nick is #2 of my 4 kids. God knows it was faith, A LOT of hard work, and sacrifice that made providing for Nick in this way possible. I remember when it was time for him to pick a college and he said, “I’m not going to get a full ride like Michael. I don’t take pictures like him or play sports. How are we going to pay for this (his Dad had the same question).” I told both of them that if Nick does his part, God will handle the rest. His first semester of freshman year, he got $4000 (4- $1000) scholarships, his Dad and I split the gap of about $9K. I did not have an extra $4500 laying around and, was a full time entrepreneur. I had to set up a pay agreement that first semester for my half which allowed me to pay it in four payments. Nick made the Dean’s List that first semester. After which, the school found him other scholarships without us even applying based on his academic success. This has continued EVERY semester since the first one and his Dad and I have not had to split over $3K (basically his meal plan and administrative fees) since that first semester. Since he left for college, I have gotten divorced, my income has fluctuated like any other entrepreneur, and his two little sisters require more of EVERYTHING daily and Gabbi is on a full academic ride to one of the most prestigious $30K a year high school’s in the country. She wanted to attend with all her heart and I told her what I told Nick…do your part and God will do the rest. Moms, don’t tell God about the mountain. Tell the mountain about God!!

I’m pretty sure we can admit; women are the reigning queens at getting the job(s) done, hands down. We’re the nurturers day to day and we’re living busy lives, whether it be attending school, grinding at work, or taking care of others. We do these things to the best of our abilities all while dealing with life’s every day struggles. Such women are goddesses, and quite frankly, deserve the world if you ask me. But it can seem like a daily and constant cycle of wake up, grind, take care of loved ones, sleep, repeat.

As women, our self-care is vital. Naturally, our two sides, the nurturer in us (the gentle side that doesn’t want to let our friends and family down) and the boss in us (the fierce, get-sh*t-done-and-prevail-over-any-and-all-hurdles-towards-my-success) can prevent us from taking care of ourselves, if there isn’t a healthy balance. Where is our “middle”? I’ve talked to plenty of women who unfortunately believe that they must sacrifice their happiness in order to look out for their families, jobs, friends and/or education.

Now, don’t get me wrong, many fail to see that working hard is an amazing form of self love. What better way to say, “I love me”, than to put my all into getting what I deserve in the long run? However, we all know that too much of something isn’t a good thing. In fact, I am able to work hard in a more proficient manner by taking care of and loving myself. I feel like many of us fail to see that rejuvenation periods are actually major keys to success. Like Audre Lorde says, self love and care are acts of preserving who you are as an individual. Think of it as preserving your magic, like putting your skills, talents, nurturing and hardworking abilities on a charger…Just like your phone that needs charging and your car that needs fueling.

Whew! I have lived and survived all of these! It’s an enmeshed web of grooming, love bombing, gas lighting, abuse, betrayal, lies and, discarding once they realize you see the real them and they can’t use you anymore. All the red flags be there. However, someone that has been diagnosed as living with a narcissistic personality disorder are usually so charismatic and nice upfront while preying on the strong, kind, loving and successful. They are so darn believable that we foolishly think we can navigate or eliminate their red flags. Just to give this post context, I am finishing up the last few chapters of my latest book dropping in May 👩🏽‍💻. It is inspired by (changed some names to protect the guilty 😂) some of the most intimate, painful, yet life changing lessons I’ve learned about life, love, relationships, ambition and, motherhood. I truly believe that women will walk away feeling seen, understood, and encouraged to radically accept themselves while not settling for less than they deserve! P.S. One of my closest friends that has been a mental health expert for decades explained to me that we ALL have narcissistic traits. She broke down how someone showing up to a situation with narcissistic traits is completely different than being in a relationship (romantic and non-romantic) with someone living with a narcissistic personality disorder. I believe the word is trending and is often over used as a catch all for everyone someone breaks bad with. Any survivor of this kind of abuse (it does become abusive), knows that it’s not a word to use lightly. I’m not a clinician, however, once you live a thing for years…. You become pretty intimately acquainted with it. My therapist encouraged me to tell my story unapologetically. I had to finally get enough courage to not worry about anyone included in my story that feels a way. They may have wanted to treat me better or just be an honest person 🤷🏽‍♀️. The hurt I allowed may not be my fault, however, my healing has been my complete responsibility! I’m so thankful that I took enough time to heal that I could allow and trust real love and partnership in ❤️

My mother and I have curated this safe space several times since I launched the PowHER Network. We do it in full transparency. Our story is one filled with growth, loss, accomplishments, healing, understanding, reconciliation, grace and; most importantly unconditional love and acceptance of one another and each of our lived experiences.

I was once interviewed for an opportunity by a man and he stated that my history of divorce concerned him about my commitment to the position. Chillleeee…first I had to take a deep breath because the question was insulting, irrelevant, and sexist. However, I decided to make it a very direct teaching moment vs. addressing it with emotion. Unfortunately, I have even more stories about micro aggressions or just straight aggression in the workplace at the hands of other women that make this incident look light. Women experience micro aggressions at an alarming rate and often stomach them to ensure economic stability for ourselves, our children. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t impact our emotional well being. This video gives great insights on how to address it. It saddens me that studies and new terms still are continuously being created to define negative treatment of women in the workplace. It is long past time to talk about how we as women can do better about our treatment and respect of one another at work and in life. We’ll also tackle handling the men or even bigger…why have we adopted their behaviors 🤔. Why aren’t we our sister’s keeper at all times? Meet me at #womenwinework on 2/29. PowHER Thought: Almost 20 years ago my spiritual mentor, @melvalynnhenderson, inspired me to discover the purpose already inside of me at birth. In doing so, she turned my focus and ideas about what what and true leadership look like. Two things stand out. She modeled what servant leadership in action looks like. She modeled that a true leader works themself out of a job by creating more leaders. She inspired me to be ok being authentically me! In other words…HER WORK, INSPIRED ME TO GET TO WORK! I’ll always be thankful and love her from the rooftops for that and so much more. #mentorsmatter #womenwinework
