The Flint Monster Society The Flint Monster Society’s mission is to bring a little more affordable weirdness to Mid-Michigan! Vending fairs. Movie Nights. Film festivals.

Werdiness
That's us. [email protected] Just some weirdos doing weird things in the Flint & Genesee County area of Michigan.

While this week's screening of PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE may have been canceled, I cannot recommend the film highly enough. For those who may not have seen it, it's a really fun musical interpretation of the story of Faust.
High energy.
Great music.
Brilliant filmmaking.
It really is something special that deserves more attention than it gets from the diehards and the cult movie crowd.

It's out there to rent on streamers and well worth the dough.

I consistently find myself wishing the Flint area had more venue options to capture what other communities have with impromptu movie nights and micro-film festivals. With shows like that there is no budget or not much of one, so there has to be a partnership with a venue where they benefit from the foot traffic and the organizers get to do their show.

It works. I know that personally.
But finding those spaces is so hard anymore, and that's a drag.
There's a lot of weird fun to be had on the cheap but it always takes space to do it and it's not fair to expect the Flint Local 432 to always be that space.

More art. More weirdness.
Give people a reason to come to town or stay in town and that can make ya money.

Even though the film festival was canceled I still want to help get the word out about people's films.

If you have a new film you are working on or want the world to know about, drop a comment and let's shout it to the world.

Sure, sure, sure, it's still summer.
Just look at the temperatures.
That doesn't mean that the ghouls aren't restless in their tombs and the dead aren't digging themselves slowly out of their graves.

Spooky season is approaching and with it haunt season.
Eeeeek!

Buckham Fine Arts Project launched its Writer In Residence project in early 2021 to engage contemporary literary arts and Flint’s Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) community. The Resident Writer produces written components responding to each exhibition. This collaboration provides an opportunity for the writer to engage with their interest in visual art and gain exposure for their literary work, while engaging Flint’s BIPOC community in a meaningful way. BFAP is actively seeking to grow deeper ties within our community. Compositions will be compiled with exhibition programming in a publication at the season’s end, September 2025.

A single literary artist will be selected for the 2024 - 2025 residency. They will receive an honorarium of $1,000 exemplifying BFAP’s commitment to supporting contemporary arts in our community.

Buckham Fine Arts Project is supported in part by an award from the MICHIGAN ARTS AND CULTURE COUNCIL and the NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, and the Greater Flint Arts Council Share Art Genesee Grant Program made possible by the Genesee County Arts Education and Cultural Enrichment Millage funds. My friend Ken Sagoes, who you may know from Nightmare on Elm Street 3 and 4, is trying to fundraise for a movie.

It's a fun concept and he's an outstanding person.

Having done events for nearly twenty years, I can tell you that the easiest thing to do is to stand back and criticize other people for not creating the event YOU want to see.

Whatever event you are doing, it's never easy, and it's heartbreaking to have no one show up to it or to just hang back and talk crap on it without any constructive criticism to offer.
Indie shows are dying.
Small shows are dying.

If you see that things can be done differently then DO YOUR OWN SHOW.

Put your money where your mouth is.

Until then...support the shows that are out there.
Small shows used to be the lifeblood of fandom and we're losing them.

Don't let them die.

Hey everyone, as you may have seen, I have canceled the remaining events for 2024.

I can't thank those of you that have supported this strange venture enough over the last couple of years. I started the Flint Monster Society to support the local and regional horror community. I hope I have been able to do it.
I did my shows free to vend and attend because I know too well how hard it is in the creative arts. With the film festival I have tried to bring strange and fun horror films to the area that wouldn't be here otherwise and to give filmmakers another venue to showcase their work.

I have loved doing these events, sharing these movies, and trying to bring weird events to the area.
Sadly though, I have come to realize that what I am offering and at the scale I can offer it is not necessarily what the scene wants or needs. .

It has been fun.

I am not sure if this for now or for forever but in the short term, the Summer Swamp Meet was my last show indefinitely.

Thanks to the many filmmakers that I got to showcase, thanks to the Flint Local 432 for their support and friendship, to the friends that have supported this venture, to the vendors that took a chance on my shows, and to any of you that cared.

Thanks.
