HELP!! just in time for my launch on Monday, Instagram have disabled my account!!

This is somewhat catastrophic when you’re in the middle of trying to launch a course, and today I’m trying to work out exactly how this will affect things, it’s also the last day of half term so my laptop will be coming with me wherever I go.

It’s also a really horrifying reminder that Instagram can pull the rug from under you at any point. DO NOT rely on Instagram alone to run your business.

I’ve had hundreds of new followers in the past month while people wait for me to open the doors. Now, unless they happened to have signed up to the newsletter, I have no way of launching.

Not sure what help I need really. Other than spreading the word about the launch 😭😱🤷🏼‍♀️

Wondering what The Stationery Sessions is all about?

Well, in a nutshell- its *exactly* what I wanted when I started my business 8 years ago.

A course, a community and a safe welcoming place to come and ask questions and get advice and never feel stupid.

Everything is designed so that it feels like having your personal cheerleader in your pocket.

The Stationery Sessions were created to help you run a successful business doing what you love.

A full blueprint on everything you need to run a stationery based business. Whether you're turning a hobby into a business or already run one, but don't know how to make it excel.

It's exactly what you need, right where you need it.

A full course, with over 50 hours of expert sessions, live q&a and, mentoring sessions. A Facebook group, smaller intimate groups for you to make lifelong friends and a group of amazing people who are all right behind you!!

No hard sell. No freebie to get you 'in the funnel'. No long boring sales pages. It's literally just me, and the community, giving you what you need.

I love teaching this course, I love getting to know the community- I love our catch ups and chats and sessions where we all leave feeling ready to take over the world.

The feedback I've had over the past two years has made me cry more than once, and watching some incredible people flourish has honestly been the highlight of my career.

So, I’m not a natural born salesperson.

I am however a natural born educator.

Sharing knowledge, ideas and experiences with people is my calling. And inhaling, consuming and learning as much as I can so I can simplify it and solve problems is when I feel most alive.

I want to share knowledge to make your life better. Sounds 109% corny. But this even pulls through to the way I design stationery.

I don’t just want to give you the information. I want to make sure you get it. And see the lightbulb moment when it happens.

Doors open to next Thursday (31st March). I can’t wait to get stuck in again. 🖤🖤

Why are you doing this? What is your niche? Who are you – and why are people going to come to you?

It’s first thing you need to nail when you own a business.

It’s also the first thing we tackle in . No starting you off easy 😝

Of course, we all want to run our own businesses for a variety of reasons, and a lot of these aren’t especially exciting: to have autonomy, to earn money, to work around our families – but these aren’t our ‘WHY’.

You don’t become a stationery designer to be a millionaire. I’ll burst that bubble for you right now. You can pay the mortgage and live and be happy – but I know that deep down, you’re doing it for the passion and the love.

And THIS is your why. This is why people are going to buy from you.

Passion and love for what you are creating draws people to you.

If you love what you’re making, and people can feel it, then they are going to want it.

Customers, clients, humans are attracted by - and to - people who have an enthusiasm for what they are putting out there. Think about the people you gravitate towards at a party, you want to talk to the people who have, for want of a better term, a higher positive vibe.

If you’re not absolutely besotted by what you’re making- how can you expect anyone else to be? But when it's literally beaming out of your pores; how can they resist?

Authentic, real, enthusiastic delight at being able to make what you make, and bringing people along for the journey is something that you need to ignite, and then fan those flames so that everyone can see and hear how much you love what you do.

This is why it’s so important to find your why, and your niche. For me these are almost one and the same when it comes to being a one-man-band. Your love for what you make is a very large part of why people buy from you.

YOU are your niche.

It’s the hardest part of what you need to do to start or grow your business. So we get that hard nitty gritty stuff out of the way first.

So, why is it you do what you do? Think it over and let me know.

So, as I might have mentioned, I’m perfectly aware of the sub par version of The Stationery Sessions floating about.

And I’m also aware that there are some people who (may or may not have joined this course in the past) and would really would like to join TSS but are worried because ‘the other person might find out’

Firstly - and I mean this with all my heart. You join what you need to join, and learn what you need to learn. Whether it’s from me, or from someone else. Or both!

If you’re a current member of the gang, you’ll know I’m going to signpost you to all sorts of people who know the right things.

I don’t ever want you to feel like you have think about me before you go and expand your knowledge! You do you. Who cares what I think!

My goal is to fill you with the confidence to get up and go and ideally not need me at all anymore! (But I love it if you pop in and say hi and show me how amazingly you’re doing!).

Second up- your membership is entirely private. I have never and will never share who is part of the course without explicit permission first.

Lastly - don’t ever let anyone feel guilty about you wanting to further your business, your education, or doing what YOU want. Mindset is vital when you run your own business, you cannot be beholden to other peoples opinions. Even mine, and you know how opinionated I am! 😂

(Side note that I’ve just come out of sedation, so I might not be my normal cohesive self?! 😂😂)

Somethings just need to be seen moving rather than in a photo. This is one of those. The transparent foil, blind impression and clean delicate feel- the curves with a nod to the very Art Deco venue but keeping to the very minimalistic brief.

Absolutely loved working on these invitations.

Let’s talk about why (most) stationery designers have a minimum order number… and if they don’t- why they (you?) most definitely should!

First up - this is a little bit dependent on the pricing structure. There generally are two ways that wedding stationery is priced:

1/ all in- the price you see includes the cost for design,

2/ a standard design fee, plus print costs

Neither is right or wrong. In fact I use both depending on what I’m designing. Both of them however do need a minimum order number.

Let’s start with the all inclusive costs because this is where a minimum print order is going to be really important.

When you’re working with all inclusive costs, this price needs to be covering time for design, admin, overheads AND print.

Let’s say for this example the price is £5 per invitation. If someone orders 100, that’s £500. Depending on the print options (I won’t cover this here!) this *should* hopefully cover print costs, taxes, overheads etc and then your design time.

If it’s an order for 10 invitations. That’s £50…. This will certainly not cover anything.

Now, I’ve simplified this slightly because often invitations will be on a sliding scale of price depending on the number you order. But let’s correct that and say we’re looking at £10 per invitation. That’s still only £100 for all the design work, admin, overheads and print. That is a profit of about £30. For a LOT of work.

Would you work in an office for two full days for £30? I don’t even need an answer to this question.

The second method of pricing - with a set design fee - means that the price for design / overheads / admin is automatically covered. But print still works on economies of scale. And printers also will have a minimum cost for a job (because they also have bills to pay, set up costs etc etc).

So- let’s say print is £2 per invitation (again, let’s not go in to print options), charging £20 for 10 invitations isn’t ever going to pay for any print job, however small it is.

That’s not to say you can’t do small weddings, but setting a minimum order cost is really important in making sure you’re a profitable business and not an expensive hobby! (Cont… in comments!)

Oh the irony of being advertised a course that someone has entirely ripped off from …

Even more amusingly, it’s actually more expensive.

It’s an entire carbon copy, including a community, the course modules (including a class on Trello….) and guest experts. Not one original thought has gone in this other than a much longer page to get through before you sign up (my pet peeve!!)

I’d be insulted, but I’m choosing to be flattered. Im also going to use it as a lesson on being original.

If someone is already doing a thing really well, I can see how tempting it is to do the same. This doesn’t just go for courses- it 100% applies to all creative endeavours. Let’s apply it to paper. If someone is already making it, and is well known for it, creating a business doing the exact same thing is a terrible idea.

I’m not saying you can’t make stationery / cards / a course too. There’s plenty of room- but it has to be different. What’s your spin.

What makes you special? Why should people choose you?

The first module of the in fact talks about this in so much depth. Finding your niche, and then niching down even more is so so important- especially in an industry with so much noise.

A reminder that the doors to open on March 31st. I don’t have a long sales page because it speaks for itself (and current course members love it so much they shout about it too 💕💕💕💕)

Currently waiting on a huge print delivery, my work is cut out for me this week, but print arrival day is always exiting.

The BEST thing about being a stationery designer / designing for print is that everything always looks even better in the flesh. Even the most basic of print has a tactile finish that makes it feel so much more exciting than on screen.

That emotive reaction to paper is 100% why I do what I do!

Don’t forget the envelope!

I will argue this forever but I’m of the opinion this is the most important bit! What’s the point of having an incredible invitation if it comes in a boring envelope.

It’s the feeling of something special landing on your doormat and the excitement of opening it.

For me, it’s where it all started.

My first love, this fully recyclable material is now everywhere.

I love it with stark black, or soft white, filled with confetti like a kaleidoscope - but mostly I love it embossed with hot foil.

Won’t even lie, blind impression is my utter favourite.

Whether it’s white on white, or the lightest shade of grey. Totally bare, has a lick of gloss or a sheer holographic wash- this minimal understated look is totally wow worthy.

Tell me this wouldn’t get prime position on the mantelpiece?

This is your reminder that we all start in the same place. And that you can absolutely do this.

Growth is slow and steady. It doesn’t happen overnight. And we all start with a clean slate, one follower, and an idea.

6 years ago today apparently.

Impressed with myself that I decided to screenshot the beginning of my Instagram and business journey.
