With the collaboration giveaway and the upcoming Mother's Day Picture Day special, we are celebrating MOMS all month long right now 🥰

My hope is that we celebrate the moms and mom figures in our lives everyday by making time to spend with them.

Time is our greatest gift 💖

I read somewhere recently that the best gift we can give to mom is the gift of 1) honoring, respecting and accepting them at where they are now (not trying to change them or their habits, even with the bestest of intentions) AND 2) taking care of ourselves.

And I kinda liked that...

I agree with the sentiment of that message.

So here's to all mamas out there 🥂

How are you loving on the moms in your life right now? 💜

Let's show some love to our moms and mama friends by sharing something you appreciate about them in 3 sentences or less....

Let's show some love to our moms and mama friends by sharing something you appreciate about them in 3 sentences or less.

Your words of love could be just the thing that person needed to hear today.

So please, share away and don't hesitate. This is for them 💕

I'll start.

Mommy, you are the strongest and most graceful person I know. Your big heart, love, resilience, and grace all lie in the unseen moments and your choices. I'm forever grateful and lucky to be your daughter. Judy Yeh

Now, your turn and tag your mama or mama friend.

Thank you, Christine! 😘

I believe having variety in a photo session is a non-negotiable. It just looks different for everyone in the 30 minutes that I work with you 💕🙏

I also believe that every family, couple, session is unique and different. I don't ever try to change that so to fit into any kind of photographic mold.

I honor who and what the family or couple is and still deliver some sort of variety.

What is variety?

Sometimes, variety is the different expressions of people.

Variety can also be found in the angles and composition.

Variety is also the motion or energy found in the moment.

Lastly, variety can also be who is found in each image.

Getting variety is important when you hire a professional. But there isn't only ONE kind of variety.

What will yours look like? 🙂

I'm glad to be getting back into again.

My goal is to get stronger 🙏

What are you doing right now for yourself?

It doesn't have to be a big commitment like a workout regimen or it can be a dream that you've finally started working towards.

Today, I want to share my TOP 3 REASONS for having a professional take my photos even as a PRO myself.

We recently got our family photos done by a dear friend's company and it was such a treat!

For years, my husband and I have taken our own photos with a tripod and taken photos of each other.

Since we are both very well versed in photo and video, we've just taken our own photos.

But boy was it refreshing and even BETTER to have someone take the photos for us.

Here are my TOP 3 REASONS why.

1. Every kid is different but boy did my kiddo LOVED our photographer and the shoot. She was all smiles and followed directions much better than when it was mommy behind the camera 🤣. At the end of the 1 HOUR session, she wanted more. It was overall a fun experience for everyone because we can all just relax and be playful and let the pro do the job.

2. I feel less attached to the results. Let me explain. When it's my shot, my editing, my choice of angle, etc. I get really nit-picky and it's harder to enjoy the photo for what it is. It's nice to someone else make those decisions and for me to just enjoy the feeling and memory behind the images. We loved almost all the images we received!

3. There is definitely more creativity in having a pro taking the shots and directing you (even as a photography myself) than what a tripod can do. And even though my husband is a filmmaker, he doesn't handle the camera with the same "eye" for stills or directions for posing (that looks natural). So having a variety of images of us that isn't just straight on portraits or stiff-looking is so well worth having someone else take the images.

Thank you Sean for such an awesome experience!

01/02/2024

For today's post, I needed a photo of me so I can make a point that pro photos are of better quality than smartphone photos even with all the filters you can apply, and the difference is big enough to hire a professional.

And I couldn't find any nice photos of me on my phone that's not a selfie (so that we can compare apples to apples and not use a photo of me just getting out of bed).

So I asked to see my husband's phone to try to find some nice photos of me.

I couldn't find any on his phone either.

(There were plenty of photos of me trying of Disney ears though lol)

So for today's chat, we'll just have to work with this selfie (see photo #3).

Originally, I wanted to talk about how when we need to print photos for any purpose, we typically look for the professional gallery our photographer sent us as our default.

Not many of us would go to our phones and search for a selfie of the family when we're looking for an image to print.

There are so many photos and videos on our phones, none of them really stands out unless it was a milestone event.

Phone photos are used to create our personal memory capsule.

They are important in that way.

But they're not the first ones we scroll through for print.

Now, why is that?

I think it's because when we print something, it feels *special* and it's a greater commitment.

And when there's commitment, there is a level of standard or rules we like to follow.

Thus, we default to our professional archive because it fits into that level of visual or quality standard we naturally expect from prints.

Anyway, that WAS the *original* topic I wanted to chat about.

And I wanted to use the below photo to illustrate this point (ie that most of us would choose image #1 or #2 to print over image #3).

But the fact that I couldn't find not even ONE good photo of me on my husband's phone for today's original post got me thinking about another phenomenon.

That good phone photos of me (that's not a selfie) don't really exist (and I take good photos for a living 😱). (yes, this statement is dramatized. I'm sure if I look hard enough there is probably something from 2020 and 2017...)

Unless you're a content creator, influencer, or in a field where you have to take photos of yourself, you're probably more like me where 80% of your photos are of someone or something else you love (ie. kids, scenery, cars, vacations, screenshots, etc.) and the other 15-20% is selfies of you with the someone or something else that you love.

Which leaves us at this small inconvenience that I was just in.

I couldn't find a nice photo of myself that's not a selfie.

Now, I'm not sure if it's BECAUSE I am a photographer by profession, so I/we take less photos when I'm not working or what, but I wonder if other moms/wives have witness this phenomenon?

That there is pretty much zero nice photos of you out of the 85,397 images.

Sure, it's not the end of the world.

Nothing really is, if you think about it.

But it's nice to have nice photos of you.

Anyway, if your husband's phone is like my husband's phone, holler below.

🚫STOP. And listen to your body.

What has been taking a toll on you?

We're now a full month into the new year.

How are you really?

For me, I continue to be very intentional in the decisions I make and I am surely reaping the benefits 🙏

Life moves with ease even when it's not easy.

It feels manageable even when it's not calm.

Most importantly, I'm a person that I like even when I'm not at my best.

Identifying and silencing noise that comes at me physically, mentally, emotionally is a pathway to that balance and calm so many of us seek.

And I'm fully embracing it.

It has helped me tremendously with my anxiety.

This journey can sometimes feel lonely and uncomfortable and takes a lot of work but it is 💯 worth it.

If you're also on this ride, here's a reminder to whoever needs to hear it...

Keep going, my friend. Find your calm.

The world needs you to be who you will be. ✨

Here are 5 images. I need your help to let me know which *TYPE* of photos you value most from a photo session.

>>>These photos are just examples so try to focus on the TYPE of the photo and not whether the actual photo speaks to you ☺️

Choose one OR list in the order of importance to you :)

1. Classic portraits of everyone looking into the camera
2. Interaction of kid(s) with adult(s)
3. Candid
4. Movement
5. Interaction with adults showing affection

24/01/2024

Last night I was feeling extra nostalgic and looked through some really old photos.

And I saw all the oh so infamous studio glamour shots back from the 90's 😎✨, the sticker photos that came after 😇, and the good old fashioned prints.

Oh how I remember my friends and I lining up outside of the glamour studio (inside the mall) for like 30 minutes or more, feeling giddy at the prospect of getting cute photos (and the instant 1 hour prints too- which basically is like our first taste of instant gratification that we take for granted today), while chatting about which background we'll get and how we all knew there will be individual photos of us plus a group photo... But only if we have enough money for it.

It all felt like a big deal and also super fun.

It was such a treat to flip through pages of old photographs last night.

And hilarious to see some of my "glamour" photos and sticker photos 😂

I've forgotten about some of them and that they even existed.

But when I saw them, I could instantly recall the feelings I had in the moment, mostly of joy and excitement mixed in with a dose of self-consciousness lol.

The only regret I have is not taking more photos of my daily life and the homes I lived in. Does anyone else feel that way too?

It would have been so fun to look back on what each room looked like.

THEN my mind naturally connects everything back to my life now- Amara.

I thought of how Amara will be the age I am in these photos in just a few short years.

And how much our culture, life and society has changed since then.

I loved the innocence of those years (in the photos).

But it's really hard for me to believe that Amara will get that privilege of living like that in our current world (as much as I try).

And that makes me feel really sad, let down, and a bit of grief for her loss of something she may never have.

Is the 90's better than now for kids today?

Or is that just my nostalgia talking?

What have we, the adults, the people who "know better" done to protect their innocence and their childhood?

What have we done....

(I love reading your comments and thoughts so please share 🥸)

To follow up on yesterday's post... sharing a few pages from a wedding album I designed years ago. It's nice to look back on some fond memories of my career ☺️

19/01/2024

You never forget your first.

Mine was back in 2009 about 4 months after I picked up a camera.

The first wedding I've ever shot was for $200. I was shooting for another company so I don't have the files to that wedding (which I guess it means I don't ever have to subject my heart to such cringeworthy work 😝).

Though I don't remember the images I took, I remember the rest.

This was not only my first paid job, it was also my first wedding.

If I knew anything about weddings back then, I would have known better about the high stressed environment of both couples and vendors, the "must-have" photos, the schedule of events in the day, and basically the incredibly important role the photographer plays on a wedding day to lead the course (besides just taking photos).

But I didn't.

I knew none of it.

I walked in as if I was an intern for the day.

I didn't know what photos I was supposed to take so I snapped about 46 images of every thing and every moment with no reason or rhyme. (If you didn't know, that's about 43 images too many of each).

I was too shy to have the bride look at me so most everything I captured were "photojournalistic". (Not exactly the most well-rounded approach.)

I didn't give any helpful instructions on posing the bride or groom nor did I even noticed the unflattering angles and sloppy poses the couples were in (due to my lack of professional eye and direction).

TBH, I was no better than that family uncle who wanted to capture the bride and groom using a point-and-shoot camera, with probably less wedding experience than him. 😩

I didn't even know you were supposed to capture photos of the couple with their families. 😱

(Yeah....)

There are also *key* moments in a wedding that you just don't miss.

Like the first look. First kiss. First dance.

Did I know that it was the responsibility of the photographer to capture it all AND capture them well?

Probably not.

Like I said, I was ill-prepared and very new.

And the worst part was....

I didn't even know I was doing a bad job. Like a really really bad job.

Just to put things further into perspective, in 2009 IG was not what it is today.

Which meant I was both ignorant and lazy (because IG inspiration wasn't just a scroll away) and I didn't put in the basic effort to learn about weddings (even as a beginner).

In hindsight, I learned that being ill-prepared and new are actually NOT the same thing.

They're also not mutually exclusive- because I was surely both.

Which is the probably the worst combination.

Well, the good news?

There was never a repeat of 2009.

Since then, I've captured hundreds of weddings and portraits and weddings now feel like a second home 🥰 (even with the jitters).

If today is a *first* of something for you, know that it will also be the only.

May we all grow so much from our *first* of anything ✨

And live to tell the story 😎
