As part of my 20 years of DJing celebrations, it’s time to talk about someone who has become much more than just a fellow DJ – Paddy.
I first met Paddy back in my early days at The Hansom Cab. He was the weekend DJ, and if memory serves me right, he was doing Fridays while I was covering Sundays and Mondays. We didn’t actually cross paths that much at first, but the first time we properly got talking was at Julie’s charity boxing match.
From there, a friendship was formed that has lasted for years.
Over the years, Paddy and I have become incredibly close friends. I’ve learned a lot from him, and I’d like to think he’s picked up a thing or two from me as well. Together, we’ve always made a great team. Whether it was lending each other equipment, helping each other out of a last-minute crisis, covering gigs, or simply finding ourselves with a rare weekend off and heading out for a few drinks, we’ve always had each other’s backs.
“Watch out, the boys are out!” 😂
The memories we’ve made at The Hansom Cab alone could fill a book. From Paddy having one too many and somehow managing to leave an imprint of his hair on a pillar, to the knickers thrown towards the DJ booth, countless brandies, Wray & Nephews, and the endless laughs that got us through some very long shifts.
And no… we definitely never took the mick out of customers… 👀😉
People often ask me what my best memory with Paddy is, and honestly, I couldn’t tell you. Not because there isn’t one, but because there are too many to choose from. Every time I think of one story, another ten come to mind.
One thing that always makes me laugh is our famous Hansom Cab saying:
“I’ll give it until Christmas, then I’m gone.”
For about six years straight, every Christmas came and went, and somehow we were both still there. When we finally did leave, we both said exactly the same thing:
“The best thing we ever did was leave The Cab.”
We often joke that we should have left when Julie did, but then again, if we had, we’d have missed out on so many memories that have become a huge part of our lives.
The truth is, I don’t just see Paddy as a friend anymore. I genuinely see him as family. He’s someone I’ve laughed with, worked with, learned from, and shared some unforgettable years with. Through all the madness, all the gigs, and all the stories, he’s always been there.
Thank you, Paddy, for being one of the biggest characters in my DJ journey and for being a friend I know I can always rely on.
Here’s to many more memories… although maybe a few less Wray & Nephews! ❤️🎧🍻
