Dan will be taking on the challenge to walk to Canary Wharf from The Chequers Inn pub in Heaverham, Sevenoaks this coming Thursday 13th June with a cross-country route of 24 miles.
As many of you are aware, last year both Dan, partner Emily and two children have take on a number of walks in preparation for this Grand Finale and have received massive support from many of you to raise money for The Chequers Inn and keep the doors open through these difficult times post Brexit & Covid.
Unfortunately around Christmas, Dan became unwell and subsequently had to hand his notice in as the current tenant at the pub, hence the delay in completing this. However, as time quickly passes to the end of the final two weeks, Dan will take to the footpaths (without recent training & not well prepared) in honour of your generous donations and as a massive thank you to all of our loyal guests we have loved looking after over the last 5 years!

FUNDRAISER HIKE TO CANARY WHARF

As many of you know we have been working towards a 40km walk from The Chequers Inn to Canary Wharf to raise money for our pub in these difficult times. We have undertaken hikes to Rochester Cathedral, Leith Hill in Surrey, Hever Castle & Gardens and Tonbridge Castle amongst many others, some with our young children of 9 and 6. Whilst we haven’t been shouting about our walks lately, they have still been going on. This week we will be taking on our biggest challenge so far – walking to Eltham Palace and Gardens. Any of you following our story will know how we like to walk in the footsteps of King Henry VIII. Eltham Palace was a residence that he grew up in and, if you have visited, you will know it has a fantastic view of our final destination. We estimate that this will be around 29km and will help us to plan out the starting route for the final hike to Canary Wharf, the next part we will just have to wing on the day, but previous experience suggests this won’t be a problem... although we tend to add extra miles to our challenges?!

Why are we doing this? - Hospitality has been hit very hard, even big chain companies are closing businesses. With the changes Brexit and Covid brought us pubs, nightclubs, cafes, and restaurants are having to close their doors at a rapid rate. There is a nationwide struggle to find all levels of staff. The biggest shortage being chefs. If we can’t open the kitchen, we can’t make enough money to keep the doors open. With huge food and drink inflations and sky high energy prices, it seems that all our favourite places need more support to make sure they can open another day! At the Chequers we have been lucky so far, but the summer holidays often bring quieter times.

Live music 🎶 and paella 🥘 from 6.30pm tonight!

The Kings Weekend begins! Friday evening see the return of The Chris Corcoran Trio in our garden whilst our chef cooks up a giant paella 🥘. A great way to kick things off, I'm certain a lot of you will agree!
Music kicks off at 6.30pm, an evening to get your toes tapping with one of the UK's finest musicians on the scene!..... Our famous Fish & Chips will also be cooking this do not panic!

We made it! 14 kilometres over the Surrey Hills. Evie did do a bit of dawdling but spent most of the day spinning in circles and walking in the wrong direction. She must have walked half the mileage more than the rest!....

Hospitality has hit very hard, unprecedented times, with even big chain companies losing businesses. We’ve all heard that Wetherspoons in Sevenoaks is just one of 16 for the chop. With the changes Brexit and Covid brought us there is a struggle to find, not only skilled staff, but all levels of staff. The biggest shortage being chefs. If we can’t open the kitchen, we can’t make enough money to keep the doors open. With huge food and drink inflations, sky high energy prices and people simply not having the money to go out as frequently as they once did, it seems that all our favourite places need more support to make sure they can open another day!

Here at The Chequers, we have reached a point where we need a bit more help. We’re not just asking for handouts. On Thursday 16th February our family will take on a 10k+ hike of Tillingbourne Waterfall, then onto Leith Hill, the highest point in Surrey and amongst the highest peaks in the South East of England, on a 'Site of Special Scientific Interest'. On the summit we will share snaps of Leith Hill Tower, an 18th Century Gothic Tower, built in 1765 to enjoy the glory of the English countryside, but also intentionally built to raise the hill to over 1000 feet! We will then descend the hill through the woodlands and loop back round to the start… Well, that's the plan, but with a 9 and 6 year old there may be modifications necessary!

Well what a busy weekend we had at The Chequers, lots of happy people celebrating together for big birthdays, new customers visiting for the first time and our lovely regulars too.

We also had a visit from the great granddaughter of a former landlord, look out for the fab photo she shared with us coming to a post soon.

Tuesday evening at 19:30 sees our game night in the barn, we would love you to come along and join in. Unfortunately, Sommi Pizza can't make it this week, we will have our usual range of snacks available.
