Don't Miss Out on the delightful Amersham Concert Brass Concert- 28th April

Concert Brass is just one of a wide range of ensembles in the ‘Amersham Band’ group, catering for musicians of almost all ages and abilities, with membership from Amersham and the surrounding areas. Since last playing at the Festival in 2022, the band has gone from strength to strength. They continue to be led by conductor Malcolm Peach, who brings his wide musical tastes to the band, sometimes outside traditional brass band repertoire. The adage ‘from Bach to the Beatles’ rings true with an Amersham Concert Brass programme.

The band’s core work is regular concerts, mostly supporting the Amersham community, but also further afield such as their ‘pilgrimage’ to northern brass band heartland for the Whit Friday Marches. Concert Brass also proudly continues the Amersham Band tradition of both hosting and visiting friends from the twin town of Bensheim, Germany.

An important aspect of the brass band tradition lies in ‘band contests’, so they were delighted to make their first outing onto the contest stage in 2023, finishing 5th in the National 3rd Section, plus picking up the award for ‘Best Basses’.

A Message from the Patron of the Amersham Festival Society, Countess Howe:

The Amersham Festival is celebrating its Ruby anniversary this year! With 40 years of outstanding music-making, Amersham Festival Society has been leading the way with the provision of live music in our local community. The remarkable longevity of the Festival is testament to the focus and commitment of the Society, its Trustees and volunteers under the dedicated, talented musical direction of Iain Ledingham. Iain has continued to delight audiences with his imaginative programmes and high standards of musicianship. Concerts this year include an opening concert to be held at the Royal Academy of Music and South Bucks Choral Society singing The St John Passion. There will be a wine tasting with a touch of red with Rioja and Spanish guitar music and a concert with voice and lute at Chenies. Once again local music makers have a platform, with both Amersham Music Centre and Amersham Concert Band performing. The Festival is generously supported by companies, benefactors, Friends and its loyal audiences and I would like to thank everyone for their continued support. Huge congratulations to the Festival for this landmark achievement!

Prepare to be moved by the extraordinary choral and orchestral performances at the Amersham Festival of Music! 🎵

On the 20th April, South Bucks Choral Society and Amersham Festival Chamber Orchestra will be performing Bach’s St John Passion, one of the greatest of all sacred choral works. Setting the passion narrative in chapters 18 and 19 of St John’s gospel to music of extraordinary dramatic intensity, Bach tells the story with profound insight and conviction.

South Bucks Choral Society will be joined by a team of outstanding young soloists from the Royal Academy of Music, where Iain Ledingham had the privilege of performing over two hundred of Bach’s cantatas in concerts spread over ten years.

🌟Join Iain Ledingham‘s fascinating lecture on BACH’S ST JOHN PASSION - 17th April at 7.30pm 🌟🌟

The St John Passion is one of Bach’s best-loved works and one of the greatest masterpieces of sacred music. Iain Ledingham’s lecture will provide a ‘guided tour’ of the work revealing the various ways in which Bach treats the Passion narrative (chapters 18-19 of St John’s Gospel). The Evangelist (tenor soloist) and Christus (bass soloist) sing the narrative and the words of Jesus in recitative, while the choir takes on multiple roles in the story - followers of Jesus, Roman soldiers and the angry crowd seeking the death of Jesus. The work is framed by the great opening and closing choruses, while the soloists express the Christian response to Christ’s passion in deeply felt, lyrical arias. The work is further enriched by the many chorales (Lutheran hymns) which express a corporate response to the story. It is an endlessly fascinating work, and this lecture will seek to reveal something of the richness and wonder of it.

On the 10th April, join us for one of our most popular events- wine tasting and Spanish guitar music at the Amersham Festival of Music. Limited tickets available!

We are very pleased to welcome two experts in their fields, working together to present an evening of Spanish delights.

Mario Moreno lives in Amersham and runs his own wine school and education business. Mario describes himself as ‘Made in Madrid by parents from La Rioja and the Basque Country - and matured in the Canary Islands and overseas’. He is currently qualified to WSET® (Wine and Spirit Education Trust) Level 3 Award in Wines and he obtained a postgraduate degree in oenology from La Rioja University. He is also a WSET® Certified Wine Educator and is currently undertaking the WSET® Level 4 Diploma in Wines. Mario recently joined the team at Amersham’s Michelin-starred Artichoke restaurant as their sommelier.

Mark Dangerfield was born in Amersham, Buckinghamshire in 2001. Having played the guitar since the age of eight and taking part in his local guitar ensemble, Mark began to show musical promise in secondary school, remaking pop songs and composing music to share with friends. Later Mark began playing in the classical style after being inspired by recordings of Julian Bream, and his playing retains stylistic influences of flamenco, jazz and rock. In 2021 Mark was selected for further study of the guitar with Professors Carlos Bonell and Christopher Stell at the Royal College of Music in London, and has since pursued studies in composition, now taking a Joint Principal Study of Composition and Classical Guitar. Alongside his studies Mark enjoys a regular performing schedule in and outside London. He is just as comfortable performing in cafés as he is in the concert hall. Mark has appeared in numerous lunchtime concerts as well as in festivals - having recently been invited to the Amersham Festival of Music concert series in 2023, the Festival of Classical Guitar Music at the Victoria Hall in Highgate and the Royal College of Music’s ‘Super String’ festival at the Amaryllis Fleming Hall.

Enjoy reliving childhood fair trips while learning about the magnificent organs and hearing the music of the exuberantly loud and impressively ornate Marenghi, Silcock Gavioli and Limonaire fair organs.

The Amersham Fair Organ Museum is one of the premier collections of mechanical organs in the country – one of Amersham's best kept secrets! Mechanical ‘fairground’ organs were used by travelling amusement proprietors at the turn of the 20th century to provide music for their rides and were recognised by all as the call to come join the fun of the fair.

As well as enjoying the music, our guided tour will explain how the historic instruments spent their working lives on the fairground, and you will gain an understanding of how a mechanical organ produces music.

The classical music ranges from that of Rossini, Verdi and Ponchielli to Strauss waltzes to musicals and a finale of Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance No.1.

Don’t miss this truly unique performance celebrating one of the most famous jazz venues the world - Ronnie Scott’s ! Step into history with "The Ronnie Scott's Story" presented by The Ronnie Scott's All Stars on the 19th April! 🎷

Set amongst the dive bars and jazz jook joints of London’s Soho, we hear about the desperate hand-to-mouth finances of the early years and the frequent police raids. We hear how Ronnie’s became neutral ground within rife gang territory and their scrapes with gangsters, including the Krays who were rumoured to have taken Ronnie and Pete ‘for a little drive’! Life at Ronnie’s is evocatively reimagined through tales of the club’s past visitors, from pop stars, film stars and politicians to comedians and royalty, but above all, the musicians…

Mixing classic music from the jazz greats who have performed at Ronnie Scott’s over its incredible 60+ year history, alongside tales of old Soho, miscreant musicians and police raids, this is a unique evening celebrating one of the world’s most famous jazz venues, its music, and history.
